Wake Up Right - August 8, 2024

Good morning, folks. Yesterday, Kamala Harris told her supporters: “…prices for everyday things like groceries are still too high… When I am president, it will be a day one priority to fight to bring down prices.”

Kamala and Joe Biden are the reason prices are too high. And last I checked, they’re still in office. If she has a plan, why isn’t she doing it right now? 🤡

Valor vulture

Kamala Harris' new running mate, Tim Walz, is under fire for embellishing his military service record, which many are calling 'stolen valor.'

What is Stolen Valor? It’s a term for people who lie about serving in the military or the extent of their military service.

Back up: A major part of the Harris campaign’s framing of Walz has been his military service — an attempt to appeal to ‘every day’ Americans. Throughout his political career, he’s suggested that he saw combat overseas. Here’s one example:

  • In one clip of Walz shared on social media by the Harris campaign, he makes the case for gun control, saying: "We can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war is the only place where those weapons are allowed."

Fact check: Walz retired from the National Guard before his contract was up after he learned that his battalion was set to deploy to Iraq in 2005.

  • Thomas Behrends, the man who led the battalion in Walz’s place, called the VP hopeful a "coward" and a "traitor" for his actions.

  • Even CNN addressed the controversy yesterday, reporting that Walz has "done it a couple of times where he has used language that has suggested that he carried weapons in a fighting situation... There is no evidence [that he did].”

The final word goes to J.D. Vance, who reacted to the news, telling reporters: "When the United States of America asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did it. When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him."

Virginia takes big steps to fight voter fraud

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin rolled out new election integrity measures ahead of the 2024 election, which include “100% paper ballots with a strict chain of custody."

The details: Youngkin issued Executive Order 35, which

  • 100% paper ballots with a strict chain of custody

  • No use of electronic voting machines that connect to the internet

  • Applications are required for mail ballots, no mass mailing of ballots

  • 24/7 surveillance for ballot drop boxes

  • Daily updates to voter rolls to remove non-citizens and deceased

  • Outlines procedures for dealing with illegals who try to vote

Election integrity matters: In his press release, Youngkin cut to the core of the issue, saying: “Every legal vote deserves to be counted without being watered down by illegal votes or inaccurate machines.

Donald Trump reacted to the news, posting on Truth Social: “The beautiful Commonwealth of Virginia, superbly led by Governor Glenn Youngkin, IS TAKING A STRONG LEAD IN SECURING THE ELECTION IN NOVEMBER… EVERY STATE SHOULD FOLLOW VIRGINIA’S LEAD… GREAT JOB!!!”

Zoom out: In 2020, Virginia went to Joe Biden by roughly 450,000 votes [10.2%], and Republicans haven’t won the state in two decades, but political strategists believe the state is in play this year.
