Good morning, Wake Up Right fam! We have a new ally in the MAGA movement. His name is Joe Biden…

🤣 Ok, not really. This was him at a 9/11 event where he swapped hats with a Trump supporter. But Joe looks awfully happy to be wearing that MAGA hat.

The Latest on the SAVE Act and the Spending Bill Showdown

House Republicans are gearing up for a showdown over government funding, with the conservative-backed SAVE Act at the center of the storm.

What is the SAVE Act? It would require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. The House passed the bill in June, but it was never brought to a vote by the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The conflict: Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson and Donald Trump, want to tie the SAVE Act to the upcoming short-term funding package. The deadline to pass the package and avoid a government shutdown is September 30. The bill is overwhelmingly popular with Republicans, but some are concerned about the political fallout that could come from a shutdown just weeks before the election.

  • 👍️ For it: Trump recently wrote on Truth Social: “DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO “STUFF” VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN – CLOSE IT DOWN!!!”

  • 👎️ Against it: Republicans in vulnerable House seats like Rep. Nick LaLota in New York said: "Allowing a shutdown means we could lose the House majority."

  • It’s worth noting that some Republicans are against it, not because of the SAVE Act, but because they don’t want to pass a “continuing resolution” spending bill that continues funding the government at current reckless levels.

Big picture: Last month, we reported that Texas found over six thousand illegal aliens on its voter rolls. Similarly, Virginia also found over six thousand illegals on their voter rolls. The margins of the upcoming presidential election will be slim. A few thousand illegals voting could be the deciding factor in key swing states.

What happens next? The combo spending bill + SAVE Act was supposed to go to a vote yesterday, but Speaker Johnson pulled it because he did not have enough Republicans’ support.

Thanks for participating in this poll and for the hundreds of written responses you shared! Below are the results and a few of your thoughts on the winner of Tuesday’s presidential debate.

Who won the presidential debate?

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 🍊 Trump (927)

🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ 🤡 Kamala (217)

🍊 “Despite the distracting and childish faces of our VP and the overly obvious bias of the moderators, Donald Trump showed us again why I am voting for him. He fights to get the truth out and does not play the political games of the puppet of the machine on the left.”

🤡 “As much as I hate to say it, and I am an avid Trump fan, I think Harris won last night's debate. She was able to goad Trump into anger. In the eyes of Trump supporters, his anger was justified. But in the eyes of the undecided, it looked weak and disjointed. I'd love to see a 2nd debate where Trump is actually able to debate political points rather than be on the offensive.”

🍊 “He spoke like a former sitting President and businessmen would/should, with vast experience & knowledge.  He can state facts, figures, dates faster than anyone can.  As usual, Kamala is puffed rice, crunchy outside, hollow inside.”

🤡 “Big trump fan but I thought he didn’t do well. I was frustrated with his performance and thought he should have reiterated over and over again that they each had 4 years and we should choose from that. Pretty simple in 10 different ways and he just took the bait over and over and got all worked up”

Undecided voters say Trump won the debate

While pundits on TV have spent the last two days arguing over who won the presidential debate, the only opinions that matter are a very small slice of the American electorate who was undecided over their pick for president — and according to several focus groups, the edge went to Donald Trump.

Zoom out: A recent NY Times poll found that 90% of voters have already decided on their choice for president. That leaves 10% of voters up for grabs — the coveted undecided voter, often Independent.

Reuters focus group: The media outlet conducted a focus group during Tuesday night’s presidential debate with ten Americans who have voted for both parties in the past but were undecided on who to support this year. After the debate:

  • 6 supported Trump

  • 3 supported Kamala

  • 1 was still undecided

What did they have to say? The voters said they found Kamala’s economic promises to be “vague” while they “trusted” the former president’s track record.

  • Mark from Florida said: “I still don’t know what she is for. There was no real meat and bones for her plans.”

  • Robert from Nevada said: "I felt like the whole debate was Kamala Harris telling me why not to vote for Donald Trump instead of why she's the right candidate."

The New York Times concurs: Similar sentiments were found in a NY Times survey conducted after the debate with undecided voters:

  • Keilah from Milwaukee said: “Trump’s pitch was a little more convincing than hers. I guess I’m leaning more on his facts than her vision… When Trump was in office — not going to lie — I was living way better. I’ve never been so down as in the past four years.

  • Jason from Arizona said: “Trump had the more commanding presentation. There was nothing done by Harris that made me think she’s better. In any way.”

Fox News held a focus group during the debate, which found that Independent voters overlapped with Republican voters when Donald Trump spoke about economic and immigration policies — two of the main voting issues in the 2024 election.

Big picture: This election will come down to a few thousand voters in swing states. These undecided voters will make the difference between a President Donald Trump and a President Kamala Harris.
