Wake Up Right - September 16, 2024
Welcome back, Wake Up Right fam. Coming at you a little late today because I’m having some work done on my kitchen, and the contractor showed up super early to start demo-ing.
Fun side note: He’s got a heavy Italian accent, so as he’s pulling down walls, he’ll shout things like “Ok!” and “Whoa!” and I swear, it sounds like a Super Mario Bros game. [I’m half Italian, so don’t come after me 🤣 🤌]

Trump survives second assassination attempt
Donald Trump survived a second assassination attempt on Sunday, and the shooter appears to be a far-left extremist with ties to Ukraine, fueled by dangerous Democrat rhetoric.
There’s a lot of news out there. Let’s try to make sense of it together…
The details: At roughly 1:30 PM on Sunday, as the former president played a round of golf at his West Palm Beach club, U.S. Secret Service (USSS) agents spotted the gunman, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Routh, in the tree line with an AK-47 style rifle.
When Trump golfs, USSS routinely scouts 1-2 holes ahead of him to clear the perimeter.
USSS engages: According to reports from the Palm Beach Sheriff as well as Fox News’ Sean Hannity, when the agents spotted the barrel of the shooter’s gun poking through the fence, they immediately engaged him, while agents back with Trump tackled him to the ground.
The shooter escaped through the tree line, but a bystander spotted him getting into a black Nissan and took a photo, which helped police find him shortly after and take him into custody.
Back at the golf club, USSS found the shooter’s abandoned rifle, scope, and a mounted GoPro camera, indicating he intended to record himself shooting Trump.
Within striking distance: Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed Trump was only 300-500 yards away, “but with a rifle and scope like that, that’s not a long distance.”
Back up: This is the second attempt to assassinate Trump in the last two months. In July, a shooter grazed Trump's eat while he spoke at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Let’s talk about the shooter: Routh has been confirmed as a current Hawaii resident who previously lived in North Carolina. Federal Election Commission records show he donated to Democrats 19 times since 2019. Photos obtained by the Daily Mail show a Biden-Harris sticker on a truck in the driveway of his Hawaii home.
Ukraine ties: Most of Routh's social media presence was dedicated to an obsessive effort to recruit people to go fight for Ukraine in its war with Russia, even writing, “I am willing to die for Ukraine.” He was quoted in several newspapers, including the New York Times, for his recruitment efforts.
Radicalized by Democrats? Routh’s social media posts also included anti-Trump messages, including one post from April of this year where he suggested Trump's campaign slogan should be "make Americans slaves again master." In the same post, he wrote, "DEMOCRACT is on the ballot” — a long used by Democrats, including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, to create fear over a potential Trump presidency.
Trump responds: Following the attempted assassination, Trump released a statement that read, in part, “I AM SAFE AND WELL. Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER.”
How was he allowed to get so close? The Palm Beach Sheriff confirmed that “At this level that he is at right now, he’s not the sitting president. If he was, we would have had this entire golf course surrounded. But because he’s not, security is limited to the areas that the Secret Service deems possible.”
It’s a disgrace that the former president, who was shot just two months ago, is being nickel and dimed for resources.
