Inflation hits lowest level in four years

U.S. inflation cooled sharply in March — the lowest since early 2021 — giving a boost to President Trump’s energy-first economic strategy.

The details: The Consumer Price Index rose just 2.4% year-over-year in March — down from 2.8% in February and well below Wall Street’s 2.6% forecast.

• Trump celebrated the news on Truth Social, writing: “Just out: ‘INFLATION IS DOWN!!!’”

Driving the decline: The positive report was driven by slumping energy prices along with low increases in shelter, airfare, and vehicles. A few highlights:

• ⛽️ Gasoline: -9.8%

• 🚙 New vehicles: 0%

• 🛻 Used vehicles: +0.6%

• 🥦 Fresh veggies: -3%

• 💡 Electricity: +2.8%

• 👗 Clothing: +0.3%

• 🏠️ Shelter: +4%

• ✈️ Airfare: -5.2%

• 🍗 Chicken +1.3%

• 💊 Medicine: +1.2%

• 🏥 Medical care: +3%

Anything under 2-3% is good news. Seeing some items go negative is GREAT.

Perspective: During Biden’s four years in office, there were just two months where inflation was this low.

• Back up: Under Biden, average inflation was 5%, peaking at 9.1% in June 2022. In Trump’s first term, average inflation was 1.8%.

It’s the energy, stupid: On his first day in office, Trump declared a National Energy Emergency, citing the need to bring costs down for consumers and a national security need for domestic production. Since then, he:

• withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord

• suspended several environmental regulations

• lifted a moratorium on LNG exports

• designated coal as a 'mineral' and lifted barriers to mining

Big picture: Trump ran on the thesis that low-cost energy leads to low-cost goods and services. Just two months into his second term, the data is starting to back him up.

Big, beautiful bill

House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a major legislative victory to President Trump on Thursday — passing his “big, beautiful” budget resolution that paves the way for conservative policy reforms and could net a $1.5 trillion cut in federal spending.

The details: The bill passed 216-214, with only two Republicans—Reps. Thomas Massie and Victoria Spartz—opposing. No Democrats voted in favor. Here’s what’s in it:

• makes Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent

• funding for border security and national defense

• extends the debt ceiling for two years

Spending cuts: Conservatives have committed to finding between $1.5 and 2 trillion in spending cuts in this budget. However, the resolution passed by the House yesterday does not outline the cuts.

Resolution confusion: Congress didn't pass the actual bill yesterday. A budget "resolution" is like a financial blueprint Congress uses as it works on the actual budget bill. But most importantly, passing a “resolution” allows Republicans to avoid the “filibuster.” Meaning they need just 50 votes in the Senate — as opposed to 60.

The last word: President Trump reacted to the passage, writing on Truth Social: "Congratulations to the House on the passage of a Bill that sets the stage for one of the Greatest and Most Important Signings in the History of our Country. Among many other things, it will be the Largest Tax and Regulation Cuts ever even contemplated. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
