Deal or No Deal?
Twenty-one hours of face-to-face talks between the U.S. and Iran collapsed Sunday without a peace deal – and President Donald Trump responded by ordering the Navy to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
Set the scene: Vice President JD Vance represented the Trump administration delegation in Islamabad, Pakistan. Iran's delegation included roughly 70 regime officials led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
What went wrong? There were two major holdups. First, Iran refused to commit to stop working towards a nuclear weapon. Second, the two sides could not settle on a solution for who controls the Strait of Hormuz.
What the Trump admin says: Vance told reporters that Iran "chose not to accept our terms," calling the outcome worse for Tehran than for Washington.
What Iran says: Iran's foreign ministry said there was never an expectation of a deal in a single session, particularly amid an active war.
Back up: These were the highest-level direct meetings between Washington and Tehran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution
The numbers: Oil prices jumped 8% Sunday, with Brent crude back above $102 a barrel – a reminder that every escalation at Hormuz hits wallets worldwide.
No oil for anyone: Hours after talks collapsed, Trump announced the U.S. Navy would blockade the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has been blocking ships unless they pay a toll. Trump is now saying the U.S. will block those ships that pay Tehran – meaning no one gets through, period.
Real talk: Trump's move to block the Strait is very smart. It's a squeeze play, cutting of Iran's ability to profit and frocing them to the negotiating table.
What's next? The blockade goes into effect today at 10 a.m. ET.

Sexual assault allegations force Swalwell to drop out of California governor’s race
Rep. Eric Swalwell – who just a week ago was the front-runner to be California's next governor – ended his campaign Sunday night after rape allegations from four women collapsed his support.
The details: The San Francisco Chronicle first reported Friday that a former staffer alleged Swalwell sexually assaulted her on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to consent — once in 2019 and again at a 2024 New York gala.
CNN then reported that three additional women described separate instances of alleged misconduct, including unsolicited explicit messages and nude photos sent via Snapchat.
Democrats jump ship: All 21 House and Senate Democrats who endorsed Swalwell rescinded their support within 24 hours. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Adam Schiff, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries all called on him to drop out of the race. His own senior staffers quit en masse Saturday, issuing a joint memo withdrawing support.
What’s Swalwell saying? The disgraced lawmaker wrote on X:
“I am suspending my campaign for Governor. To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”
…in the same breath, he apologized for his mistakes, and then said they’re false allegations. 🥴
Flashback: During Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearings in 2018, when there were accusations of assault against him, Swalwell said:
"What are the chances that three or four women, independently, who never met each other, would have similar experiences with one person?”
Let’s not forget: Swalwell has been here before. In 2020, classified intelligence revealed he fell for a honeypot scheme, where he had a sexual relationship with a Chinese spy named Christine “Fang Fang” Fang, who placed an intern in his office.

What’s next? The Manhattan District Attorney's office opened a criminal investigation Saturday into the 2024 New York allegation. And there are efforts to have him removed from Congress.
