Good morning, Wake Up Right fam! The photo below, NYC Mayor Mamdani with the New York Mets mascots, was taken on April 9. Since then, the team has lost 11-straight games.

Iran is sitting on enough uranium for 10 nukes

Iran is hoarding nearly 1,000 pounds of near-weapons-grade uranium – enough fuel for up to 10 atomic bombs, according to 60 Minutes – a report that, if true, would vindicate President Donald Trump's hardline push to take action against the Iranian regime.

The details: The report laid out just how close Iran has crept to nuclear breakout, even after last June's U.S.-Israeli strikes on three of its nuclear sites.

  • Let’s get specific: U.N. inspectors believe Iran is holding roughly 970 pounds of uranium enriched to 60% – one short technical step from the 90% needed for a bomb.

  • Why don’t we bomb it? Most of the stockpile is believed to be buried under Isfahan, in tunnels deep enough that U.S. bunker-busters may not reach.

Why it matters: Trump has repeatedly said Iran "will not have a nuclear weapon," and the numbers back him up. Harvard nuclear analyst Matthew Bunn told CBS the stockpile is enough for "ten to eleven nuclear bombs" with just a little more enrichment.

The timeline: Analysts estimate Iran could convert its 60% stockpile to weapons-grade in a matter of weeks — some estimates run as short as days under ideal conditions.

What happens next? On Friday, Trump claimed Iran agreed to hand over its "nuclear dust," but a lot has changed over the past few days. And the ceasefire expires on Wednesday.

Mamdani’s grocery moneypit

Mayor Zohran Mamdani's city-owned grocery store in East Harlem will cost roughly four times what private chains spend to build – and lose at least $300,000 a year, possibly forever, according to industry experts who reviewed the plan.

The details: The 9,000-square-foot store, slated to open in 2029, pencils out to more than $3,000 per square foot – a $30 million price tag.

  • Is that bad? Yes. For comparison, building a new Whole Foods or Trader Joe's from scratch costs roughly $800 per square foot, or roughly $7.2 million for the same footprint.

  • Experts say the grocery store would have to generate $137,000 in daily sales ($50 million a year) for six years in order for taxpayers to recoup the $30 million Mamdani is paying for the store. For perspective, much larger stores usually generate $16 to $27 million annually. So it ain’t happening.

Industry perspective: A grocery consultant said because the industry is a slim-margin business – 12% gross in good years – the city-owned stores will likely lose at least $300,000 a year since they don’t make much money on the marked-down groceries.

The business model: Mamdani's plan is to build a fleet of city-owned grocery stores that offer discounts on staple items like bread, milk, and eggs. What he doesn’t want residents to know is that their tax dollars are paying for the reduced prices.

Quote: John Catsimatidis, the owner of Gristedes, a NYC grocery chain, put it bluntly: "I could probably open up 10 stores with $70 million" – the total Mamdani has earmarked for five city-owned markets, one per borough.

The last word goes to Mamdani, who was recently asked by NBC News if he still believes in Democratic Socialism. He said: “I believe in it even more than I did the day before.”
