Wake Up Right -April 23, 2025

Good morning, folks! A new poll just dropped, showing Americans aged 30-39 give President Trump his highest approval ratings. That happens to be my age group. Proud elder millennial here, reporting for duty. 🫡

Boomers/Silent Generation fam… You’re not the problem. But can you tell your fellow 70+ to turn off the CNN?

Bye-bye artificial food dyes

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. unveiled a sweeping plan to eliminate petroleum-based synthetic food dyes from the U.S. food supply, in partnership with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary.

The details: During a press conference on Tuesday, the pair highlighted studies linking artificial food dyes to conditions like ADHD, diabetes, and cancer — and outlined steps their agencies will take “to remove petroleum-based food dyes from the U.S. food supply and from medications.”

The plan: In a press release, the Trump administration outlined the actions it would take to phase out the artificial dyes:

  • The FDA will phase out six synthetic dyes, including Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 5, by the end of 2026.

  • It will revoke authorization for Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B in the coming months.

  • Four natural alternatives will be fast-tracked for approval.

What are artificial food dyes? They’re color additives made from petroleum-based chemicals in a lab to make foods brighter — commonly found in candy, cereals, snacks, sodas, desserts, and processed foods.

Zoom out: Several of these artificial food dyes — like Red 40 and Yellow 5 — are already banned or heavily regulated in many European countries.

Back up: RFK Jr. pointed out that when his uncle, John F. Kennedy, was president, “three percent of American kids had chronic disease. Today it’s around 60 percent.

The last word goes to RFK, who vowed: “We’re going to get rid of every additive in food that we can legally address.”

Vance leads trade negotiations with India

Vice President JD Vance announced this week that the U.S. and India have finalized the “terms of reference” for a new trade agreement — a major first step toward a deal that would set the tone for the Trump administration’s tariff negotiations with other nations.

The details: Vance arrived in India on Monday, accompanied by his wife, Usha, and their three children, for a four-day visit to work on the framework for a bilateral trade deal with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Vance told the press yesterday:

  • "In our meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Modi and I made very good progress… and we’re especially excited to formally announce that America and India have officially finalized the terms of reference for the trade negotiations. I think this is a vital step toward realizing President Trump and Prime Minister Modi’s vision because it sets a roadmap toward a final deal between our nations.”

The framework: As part of their bilateral framework, Vance and Modi agreed to target $500 billion in trade by the end of the decade. For perspective, last year it was roughly $130 billion.

  • Vance emphasized areas of focus, like: India purchasing more U.S. energy and boosting manufacturing supply chains.

Back up: After Trump imposed a 27% tariff on Indian goods earlier this month, he quickly imposed a 90-day pause, giving room for negotiations.

Zoom out: Yesterday, the White House confirmed it currently has 18 trade proposals “on paper” and is meeting with “34 countries this week alone.”

Zoom out further: This positive trade news led to massive gains in the stock market, and signs point to another rally today.

BFFs: An unspoken factor in these trade negotiations is the bond between Trump and Modi. Modi was one of the first world leaders to meet with Trump after he returned to the White House. And during the first term, the duo held a major joint rally in Texas, nicknamed "Howdy Modi."

  • In March, Modi sat down with podcaster Lex Friedman, during which they discussed Trump. Watch for yourself and decide if you think there’s a genuine bond.

Big picture: While a trade deal framework with India is putting the economy at ease, there’s a bigger factor at play: China. Vance alluded to it in his remarks:

  • "We believe a stronger India means greater economic prosperity. But also greater stability across the Indo-Pacific, which is, of course, a shared goal for all of us in this room. I believe that if India and the United States work together successfully, we are going to see a 21st century that is prosperous and peaceful. But I also believe that if we fail to work together successfully, the 21st century could be a very dark time for all of humanity."

Would AOC on the 2028 ticket be good news for Republicans?

Your responses from yesterday’s newsletter below:

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 👍 Yes (821)

🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ 👎 No (260)

👍 Yes: “The further left they go, the more of the middle we grab up.”

👍 Yes: “She’d never get the independent votes. She is too inexperienced and too far left.”

👍 Yes: “The last election (2024) is a clear indication that the progressive movement is not popular!”

👎 No: “She’s a superficial candidate and we live in a superficial world, with very little critical thinking. If we ended up with Biden we could as easily wind up with AOC.”

👎 No: “I have ‘Progressive’ friends who all consider AOC a ‘rock star’ and it's frightening how much she appeals to young liberal women as well. We may think she's dumb (and she is) but to your average Democrat used to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris word salad, she sounds positively brilliant.”

Shop the Wake Up Right store!

About two months ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:

DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.

Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.

Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Comfort Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.
