Judge pauses Dems’ Virginia gerrymandering

A Virginia circuit court judge blew up the Democrats' redistricting victory less than 24 hours after voters approved it – ruling the entire referendum unconstitutional and blocking certification of the results.
The details: Tazewell Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley ruled Wednesday that all votes cast on Virginia's redistricting amendment were unconstitutional, entering an injunction to block certification and denying Democrats' motion to stay the ruling pending appeal.
Let’s get in the weeds: The judge says Democrats botched the process. Virginia's constitution requires the legislature to pass an amendment, hold an election to seat a new General Assembly, and then pass the same amendment again before it can go to voters.
The problem for Dems: They didn't pass the amendment for the first time until Halloween 2025 – but over a million Virginians had already voted in that middle election weeks earlier. The sequence was backwards.
Back up: The referendum passed Tuesday and would hand Democrats a 10-1 edge in Virginia's congressional delegation, despite Republican voters making up nearly 50% of the state.
What the Dems are saying: Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, a Democrat, immediately vowed to appeal, calling Hurley an "activist judge."
Reminder that Jay Jones was caught in text messages wishing his political opponets’ children would die.
What's next: Former VA AG Ken Cuccinelli predicts a final ruling by May. Until then, certification is frozen, and the new map is in legal limbo.

Canada clears terrorist for trip to Middle East

Giphy
A Canadian terrorist who stormed a military recruiting center and stabbed soldiers has been cleared by the government to travel to Saudi Arabia and Somalia – even as officials openly admit he still poses a "significant threat to public safety."
The details: Ayanle Hassan Ali, 38, was ruled not criminally responsible for the 2016 Toronto stabbing spree due to schizophrenia. Now the Ontario Review Board has green-lit a three-week trip with his father.
🗒 Itinerary: A pilgrimage to Mecca, followed by a trip to Somalia to meet a bride his father is arranging.
Back up: Ali burst into the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre in March 2016, punched a corporal, and slashed him with a kitchen knife before chasing a sergeant and stabbing another soldier on the ground.
He was detained at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton from 2018 to 2023, then conditionally discharged to live with family.
Islamic terrorist: Ali screamed “Allah told m to do this” while stabbing the soldiers and his iPod was open to the Quran as officers pinned him down.
Threat to public: The Review Board's own lawyers admitted Ali "continued to pose a significant threat to the safety of the public." He recently switched from injectable antipsychotics to oral pills – a compliance gamble.
Big picture: Canada's system deemed a man who tried to kill uniformed soldiers for Allah too mentally ill for prison – but sound enough to board an international flight.
