Trump admin locks biological men out of womens’ shelters
President Donald Trump's housing chief is rewriting nearly 50 regulations to put biological sex back at the center of federal housing policy — and end the Obama-era rule that let men into women-only spaces.
Back up: The Obama administration's 2016 Equal Access Rule required HUD-funded shelters to house residents based on self-identified gender — not biological sex.
The details: HUD Secretary Scott Turner unveiled a proposed rule on April 23 that scraps "gender identity" from the agency's regulatory framework and replaces it with sex (male/female).
Roughly 50 regulations would be amended to define terms like "mother," "father," "woman," and "man" by biology.
The Equal Access Rule's "gender identity" nondiscrimination clause would be stripped from all Community Planning and Development programs.
Domestic violence shelters, transitional housing, and other women-only facilities are the primary beneficiaries.
Why it matters: Critics of the Obama-era rule argued for years that it forced women fleeing abuse to share intimate spaces — including showers and sleeping quarters — with biological men. In one 2018 case, nine women in Fresno sued a publicly funded shelter alleging exactly that.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a new congressional map that could flip four seats to the GOP in 2026 – and he's doing it 24 hours before the Supreme Court handed Republicans the legal green light by upholding Texas's mid-decade redraw.
The details: DeSantis pitched the map as a population correction, not a power grab, saying Florida "got shortchanged in the 2020 Census" and now sits on a 1.5-million-voter Republican advantage.

SCOTUS Choosin’ Texas: On Monday, the Supreme Court overruled a lower court that had struck down Texas's GOP-drawn map as a racial gerrymander. The 6-3 ruling locks in five new Republican-leaning Texas seats through 2030 and signals that mid-decade redraws will survive judicial challenge — a tailwind DeSantis will lean on hard.
What the left is saying: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries warned Florida Republicans to "F around and find out,” and suggested that voters would rebel against the move.
DeSantis fired back with an offer to fly Jeffries down personally: "I'll put you up in the Florida governor's mansion… There’s nothing that could be better for Republicans in Florida than to see [Hakeem Jeffries] everywhere around this state.”
Big picture: The redistricting arms race has gone national. Texas locked in five GOP seats. California's aiming to flip four Republican districts blue. Virginia voters just approved an amendment expected to net Democrats four seats. Maryland and Missouri are mid-fight.
