Trump’s Declaration of Economic Independence

"My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day."

President Donald Trump ushered in a bold shift in U.S. trade policy yesterday, announcing tariffs on more than 180 countries aimed at addressing decades of trade imbalances.

The details: At a Rose Garden event dubbed "Liberation Day," President Trump delivered a triumphant message to a crowd of lawmakers, union workers, farmers, and small business owners:

  • “April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America's destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to Make America Wealthy Again.”

The framework: Trump then proceeded to lay out the major pillars of his tariff executive order, which include:

  • Baseline 10% tariff on all goods entering the U.S., effective April 5

  • Automobile tariff: All imported automobiles will receive a 25% tariff, effective today

  • Reciprocal tariffs on the countries with especially egregious duties on American goods, going into effect April 9

Reciprocal tariffs: Trump highlighted 184 countries that will be affected by the reciprocal tariffs, explaining his rationale simply, saying: "Reciprocal. That means they do it to us, and we do it to them. Very simple."

Examples: The White House released charts of each country, the rate at which they tariff U.S. goods, and the tariffs they will now pay. Some of the big trade partners include:

  • 🇨🇳 China: 34% vs their 67% tariff on U.S.

  • 🇪🇺 EU: 20% vs. their 39% on U.S.

  • 🇯🇵 Japan: 24% vs. their 46% on U.S.

  • 🇮🇳 India: 26% vs. their 52% on U.S.

  • 🇹🇼 Taiwan: 32%, despite their 64% on U.S.

Tit for tat: Many countries on the list will only recieve a flat 10% tariff, matching their tariff on U.S. goods. They include the U.K., Brazil, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Australia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Argentina, and dozens more.

Important note: Trump’s team calculated tariff rates from our trade partners to also account for currency manipulation, trade barriers, and VAT taxes.

Back up: For decades, the U.S. has been the victim of major trade deficits, highlighted by a $1.2 trillion shortfall in the last year of Joe Biden's residency. In his speech, Trump noted:

  • “Since the beginning of NAFTA, America lost 90,000 factories, 5 million manufacturing jobs, while tacking up trade deficits of $19 trillion.”

Trump doesn’t blame them: In his speech, Trump noted: “I don’t blame these other countries at all for this calamity, I blame former presidents and past leaders.”

Real talk from G: Democrats are weaponizing the idea that tariffs could result in slightly higher prices on things we import, like electronics. But Americans can’t feed their children. Cheap electronics don’t matter when our working class is being hollowed out and their jobs shipped overseas. Tariffs will force companies that want to access the American market to build their products in the United States and employ American citizens. Trump is playing a long game, knowing that in the short term, he will take political hits. We shouldn't support him and see this through. If we do, this time next year, the American worker will be rewarded for it.

Shop the Wake Up Right store!

About a month ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:

DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.

Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.

Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Custom Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.

No, Elon Musk isn’t stepping down

Rumors circulated yesterday that Elon Musk would be prematurely exiting his role in the Trump administration, fueled by anonymous “sources.” However, the administration and Musk himself have denied the claims.

The details: A “scoop” from the left-wing Politico news outlet sparked speculation about a rift between Elon Musk and President Trump. The headline: “Trump Tells Inner Circle That Musk Will Leave Soon— claimed it was a “recent decision” that “comes as the tech mogul increasingly looks like a political liability.”

Zoom out: The story comes after Elon Musk’s effort, and $20 million in contributions, failed to get Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Brad Schimel across the finish line.

Trump-world reacts: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded on X, saying:

  • “This ‘scoop’ is garbage. Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete.”

  • Musk responded to Leavitt’s post, saying: “Yeah, fake news

The truth: Elon Musk currently serves as a “special government employee” in the Trump administration — a position limited to 130 days. His term was always set to end in a few weeks. Politico took this well-known fact and spun it as a “recent decision” to stoke drama and suggest a falling-out that doesn’t exist.

The last word goes to Trump, who just days ago said: “I think he’s been amazing, but I also think he’s got a big company to run so at some point he’s gonna be going back… But I’d keep him as long as I can keep him. He’s a very talented guy.
