American automakers get behind Trump tariffs

American automakers — namely General Motors (GM) and Ford — are reciprocating the love from President Trump's recent 25% tariffs on auto imports.​

The details: The details: General Motors announced plans to ramp up U.S. production, and Ford is giving Americans a steep discount.

• GM plans to boost production of light-duty trucks at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, assembly plant, creating several hundred American jobs.

• Ford is offering American customers the same discounts it gives to employees through its 'From America, For America' initiative” — running through June 2.

The union view: United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain — who endorsed Kamala Harris — called Trump's move "a victory for autoworkers" and a "long-overdue shift away from a harmful economic framework that has devastated the working class" and "signals a return to policies that prioritize the workers who build this country—rather than the greed of ruthless corporations."

Calling out the auto imbalance: During Trump's "Liberation Day" speech on Wednesday, he explained why he’s imposing a 25% tariff on foreign autos:

• "Until today, the United States has for decades charged a 2.5% tariff... on foreign-made automobiles. The European Union charges us more than 10% tariffs, and they have 20% VATs [taxes].”

• “Toyota sells 1 million foreign-made automobiles into the United States. And General Motors sells almost none. Ford sells very little. None of our companies are allowed to go into other countries."

Retired autoworker Brian Pannebecker, who spoke at Trump’s Liberation Day speech, said:

• "I have watched my entire life... plant after plant after plant in Detroit [are closed]... And Donald Trump's policies are gonna bring product back into those underutilized plants... And the UAW members... we support Donald Trump's policies on tariffs 100%."

Promises made, promises kept: During President Trump’s inauguration speech in January, he pledged:

• “We will build automobiles in America again at a rate that nobody could have dreamt possible just a few years ago… I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families. Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens.”

About a month ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:

DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.

Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.

Female fencer expelled for refusing to fight a biological man

Fencer Stephanie Turner was disqualified and expelled from a women's fencing tournament for refusing to fight a biological male. Now, she's speaking up.

The details: Turner was given a black card and escorted out of the Cherry Blossom Open at the University of Maryland last weekend when she took a knee rather than face a biological man named Redmond Sullivan. Turner told Fox News:

• “I am a woman, and I have an athletic disadvantage to men, so I compete in the women’s division, which is where I rightfully am, but he has been given this opportunity to fence in the women’s division.”

Who is Redmond Sullivan? He's a biological man who, as recently as June 2023, was competing in the men's division.

Who is Stephanie Turner? The 31-year-old comes from a liberal background, raised in Washington, D.C. She switched parties this past election over the transgender athlete issue, saying she is now a "new Republican conservative."

The rules: USA Fencing’s official policy allows for transgenders to compete in the women's category. It released a statement after the clip of Turner went viral, saying:

• “The policy was designed to expand access to the sport of fencing and create inclusive, safe spaces.”

What do Americans think? 79% say men "should not" be allowed to compete in women's sports. Even among Democrats, 67% oppose the idea.
