Wake Up Right - April 9, 2025

Good morning, folks! I’ve talked a lot about Trump’s tariffs over the past week [and we’ll continue down below]. But today I want to turn the pen around and ask you for your thoughts. We’ll share them in tomorrow’s newsletter.
What do you think about Trump's tariff strategy?Write in your comments along with your vote. |

Deals on the horizon with everyone but China

President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs went into full effect at 12:01 AM today — including a 104% levy on imports from China — as major trade partners line up to negotiate.
The details: The Trump administration announced that it is engaged in high-profile trade negotiations with several of the United States' biggest trading partners:
🇰🇷 South Korea: Trump announced on Truth Social that he had "a great call" with the leader of South Korea and shared they "have the confines and probability of a great DEAL… Their top TEAM is on a plane heading to the U.S., and things are looking good.”
🇪🇺 European Union: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit the White House next week to discuss tariffs with President Trump on behalf of the European Union and is expected to propose eliminating all tariffs between the EU and the US.
🇯🇵 Japan: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced he is leading negotiations with Japan following "a very constructive phone discussion."
🇻🇳 Vietnam: Bessent told News Nation, "We have one of the Vietnamese officials coming" to the White House this week.
Zoom out: Roughly 70 countries have reached out to the White House to negotiate a deal on tariffs.
Market roller coaster: The stock market opened in the green yesterday morning, with strong gains across all major indexes. But by the closing bell, they had slipped into the red, ending the day slightly down.
What caused the slip? China. Over the weekend, in response to Trump’s tariffs, the communist nation put 34% tariffs on U.S. imports. Trump responded by slapping an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports — raising China’s total to 104% on all goods bound for the U.S.
Leverage: The American consumer is the most coveted customer in the world. Every country is fighting for a share of your spending. President Trump knows this. China knows this. And the numbers tell the story.
Numbers: In 2024, the U.S. accounted for $438 billion worth of Chinese to the U.S., while the U.S. exported only $143.5 billion to China.
Simply put: China needs us far more than we need them. Xi can rattle his saber all he wants, but deep down, he knows this is a game of chicken he can’t win.
The last word goes to President Trump, who said yesterday:
"I’m proud to be the President for the workers, not the outsourcers; the President who stands up for Main Street, not Wall Street; who protects the middle class, not the political class; and who defends America, not trade cheaters all over the globe."

Executive orders show: Trump digs coal

President Trump on Tuesday signed a sweeping executive order invoking the Defense Production Act to fast-track coal mining leases and eliminate environmental regulations — a necessary jolt to revive America’s struggling coal sector.
The details: Trump announced the order at the White House flanked by coal miners, saying it will “end the government bias against coal” and “turbo charge” mining operations. The order aims to fast-track federal leasing, streamline permitting, and roll back Biden-era regulations on coal emissions and land use.
Trump told the group: “We’re slashing unnecessary regulations that targeted beautiful, clean coal. We’re putting America first.”
Zoom out: U.S. coal output has dropped 32% since 2017, according to the Energy Information Administration. Only 175 plants still use coal significantly for power.
Energy sources: In the U.S., the top energy production comes from:
:💨 Natural gas: 38%
⛽️ Petroleum: 34%
⛏️ Coal: 11%
☀️ Renewables: 8%
☢️ Nuclear: 8%
The last word goes to the National Mining Association, which called Trump's policies “a stark shift from the prior administration’s punitive regulatory agenda, hostile energy policies and unlawful land grabs.”

About a month ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:
DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.
Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.
Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Comfort Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.
