Trump tells the UN to shove its carbon tax plan

The Trump administration has rejected a United Nations (UN) plan to impose a global carbon emissions tax on the shipping industry, calling it a direct hit on U.S. consumers and businesses.

Set the table: The “Net-Zero Framework” — approved in April by the UN’s International Maritime Organization — would set new emissions limits for ships and impose fees on those that exceed them.

What the Trump admin is saying: Secretaries Marco Rubio (State), Sean Duffy (Transportation), Chris Wright (Energy), and Howard Lutnick (Commerce) issued a joint statement rejecting the plan, warning it would raise energy, transport, and cruise costs. It read:

• “The proposed framework is effectively a global carbon tax on Americans levied by an unaccountable UN organization… The Trump Administration unequivocally rejects this proposal before the IMO and will not tolerate any action that increases costs for our citizens, energy providers, shipping companies and their customers, or tourists.”

Back up: Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accords on day one of his presidency and has made dismantling global climate agreements a core energy policy goal. The EPA is also rolling back Obama-era climate regulations, which Administrator Lee Zeldin says will save $1 trillion in hidden costs.

What happens next? Administration officials warned that it would retaliate if the plan passes in an October vote.

Kennedy Center Honors gets a Trump remodel

President Donald Trump shook up the annual Kennedy Center Honors – opting to unveil nominees like Sylvester Stallone and George Strait himself at a live press conference rather than through a press release.

The details: Trump revealed that this year's 48th annual honorees will include:

• 💪 Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone

• 🤠 Legendary country singer George Strait

• 🎸 Legendary rock band KISS

• 🎭️ Phantom of the Opera star Michael Crawford

• 🪩 Iconic disco-era singer Gloria Gaynor [I remember my mom playing her cassettes].

Back up: During the Biden regime, the Kennedy Center hosted a drag show titled "Dragtastic Dress-up" which was aimed at LGBTQ children.

Zoom out: Since taking office, Trump has sought to reform the Kennedy Center. He replaced the entire board, which then elected him as chairman. And he appointed Richard Grenell as its president.

Anti-woke awards: Trump said he turned down some suggested winners for being too "woke" and added: “Look at the Academy Awards. It gets lousy ratings now. It’s all woke. All they do is talk about how much they hate Trump."

Big picture: The Kennedy Center Honors used to be a big-time event. But in recent years, its prestige and viewership have slipped. We’ll see if Trump can right the ship.
