Trump and Musk blow up Speaker Johnson’s spending bill — for good reason

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s proposed stopgap spending bill collapsed on Wednesday after a coordinated pushback led by President-elect Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and conservative lawmakers.

The details: The 1,500-page bill collapsed less than 24 hours after its release once conservatives put it under the microscope and called out the tens of billions in new spending and provisions that would hamstring the incoming Trump administration and enable deep-state bad actors.

• Trump wrote on Truth Social yesterday: “Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH. If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, then CALL THEIR BLUFF.”

• Elon Musk posted on X: “No bills should be passed Congress until Jan 20, when @realDonaldTrump takes office. None. Zero.”

What was wrong with the bill? The bill was sold to Americans as a means to avoid a government shutdown, deliver disaster aid to areas of the country hit by hurricanes, and provide relief to American farmers — sounds nice, right? Once you look under the hood, you find:

• $380 billion in new spending, according to Vivek Ramaswamay.

• Congress gives itself a pay raise and provides new health benefits

• Extends funding for the Global Engagement Center, which funds organizations to censor conservative media.

• Protections for members of Congress to avoid federal subpoenas, which would make it difficult for the Trump administration to investigate corruption like the J6 committee.

• Pays for a new football stadium in Washington D.C.

• Expands the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness and Response Act, which allows for vaccine and mask mandates, vaccine passports, intentional emergency powers, and gain of function research.

• Changing the term "offender" to "justice involved individual."

…just to name a few.

Killed the Bill: Musk declared victory after online backlash led to Speaker Johnson pulling the bill, writing: “Your elected representatives have heard you and now the terrible bill is dead. The voice of the people has triumphed! VOX POPULI VOX DEI”

What happens next? Politico reports Johnson’s team is reportedly considering a “clean” CR that would strip contentious provisions and delay major funding debates until 2025.

Big picture: On the surface, Johnson’s initial proposal to delay a spending fight until March under the new Trump administration seems reasonable. However, it should have been a clean continuing resolution extending current spending — not billions in Democratic spending and provisions that could hinder Trump’s next term.

Real talk from G: I don’t know if Johnson is a bad guy or a bad negotiator [I think it’s the latter], but either way you crack it, this egg is smelling rotten ahead of a vote next month to decide whether he will remain Speaker.

The deadline to fund the government is 12:01 am on Saturday.
