FDA tightens rules around ‘healthy’ label
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is rewriting what it defines as "healthy" — requiring stricter nutritional standards for products to earn the label.
The details: The FDA aims to "empower consumers" as they search for healthy options in the grocery store aisles and aims to "reduce the burden of diet-related chronic diseases.”
Back up: This is the first major update issued by the agency in 30 years.
The changes: The new labeling system requires that foods must limit sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars in order to claim to be "healthy" on packaging.
For example, a half cup of fruit or veggies must contain no more than 2% of the daily sugar allowance. Additionally, sodium can’t exceed 10% and 5% for saturated fats.
Healthy without question: Whole foods with no additives automatically qualify for the “healthy” label.
Oils: For oils to claim to be healthy, they must be certified as 100% pure, and no more than 20% of their fat can be saturated.
Olive and avocado oil [popular with many in the anti-seed oil movement] contain less than 20% saturated fat and would be considered healthy.
However, popular alternatives like butter and beef tallow contain north of 50% saturated fat.
Zoom out: According to the CDC, 73.6% of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese.
Artificial coloring: According to media reports, the FDA may also move to ban artificial red food dye, which is already heavily restricted in Europe for health concerns such as links to hyperactivity in children and cancer in lab animals.
Big picture: Over the last few years, we’ve witnessed a merger of the anti-establishment health-conscious movement and the political right, highlighted by the integration of lifelong Democrat Robert F. Kennedy Jr. into the mainstream of the Republican party. RFK Jr. campaigned for President-elect Donald Trump with the 'Make America Healthy Again' message. While this move by the FDA is a small step in the right direction, it’s just a tiny step in the marathon of changes Kennedy and Trump are expected to bring over the next four years.
