FEMA funding illegal alien stays at luxury NYC hotels

Elon Musk revealed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) discovered that last week alone, FEMA had distributed $59 million in taxpayer dollars to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal aliens.

What does FEMA do? The Federal Emergency Management Agency is responsible for managing disaster response, relief, and preparedness. It is not meant to subsidize sanctuary city efforts to house illegal aliens.

The details: In a post on X yesterday, Musk revealed:

• “The @DOGE team just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants. Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order. That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals! A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds.”

NYC officials responded, claiming "only" 19 million of the $59 million will go towards luxury hotel stays. How comforting.

Back up: Last month President Trump signed an executive order to create a council to review FEMA over "serious concerns of political bias."

Ballooning under Biden: FEMA’s migrant spending exploded under Biden, growing from $30M in 2019 to $640M in 2024.

Rotten Apple: New York City has spent over $7 billion housing, feeding, and educating illegal aliens since Joe Biden's border crisis began.

• The migrant crisis has been a boon to NYC hotels, who have pocketed over a billion dollars by converting their properties into shelters.

A resolution: Acting FEMA Director Cameron Hamilton responded to the news on X, writing: "Effective yesterday these payments have all been suspended from FEMA. Personnel will be held accountable."

Big picture: FEMA’s job is to provide disaster disaster relief for Americans. Not luxury hotels for non-citizens. It’s that simple.

Google Calendars remove diversity holidays

Google Calendar has quietly removed automatic listings for diversity-related holidays like Pride Month and Black History Month in 2025 — the latest move in the company’s shift away from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

The details: Google’s popular web and mobile calendar product used to carry a long list of holidays — that were pinned to users’ calendars without their consent. However, users noticed the 2025 calendar lists only public holidays and national observances.

• A Google spokesperson said: “[M]aintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable.”

In & Out: Indigenous People’s Day, PRIDE Month, Women’s History Month, and Black History Month were removed. Instead, the calendar now focuses on days like Presidents Day and Valentine’s Day.

Zoom out: Following President Donald Trump's re-election, Google has made several high-profile moves away from DEI, such as:

• Eliminating its DEI hiring goals

• Changing the 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America'

What the left is saying: I noticed that The Verge, who originally broke this story, cites a user who said Google did this to "capitulate to fascism." However, the user they cite only created their Google account 10 days ago, which suggests she doesn’t even use the product herself.

Real talk: There is a time and place to recognize cultural holidays. It should not be controversial that Google no longer forces them into your daily planner — right between your dentist appointment and your yoga class.
