Star Spangled Slugfest

Tensions were high in Montreal as the United States and Canada faced off on the ice — reflecting geopolitical tensions between the North American neighbors. But in the end, the U.S. team literally pummelled the competition.

Background: The U.S. and Canadian teams were facing off as part of the National Hockey League (NHL)’s Nations Face-Off tournament.

Pregame: When the Star Spangled Banner was sung by Candian Roya Airfrce member David Grenon before the game, fans erupted in boos, nearly drowning out the anthem.

Team USA responds: As soon as the the puck dropped, Team USA star Matthew Tkachuk went after Canada’s Brandon Hagel, throwing haymakers. Immediately after the players were separated, two other fights broke out between the teams.

  • Reaction: Bartsool Sports president Dave Portnoy wrote on X: “I didn’t care about this USA hockey game but that was 19 fights ago. Holy sh*t 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

The scoreboard: Despite Canada scoring the first goal, the U.S. returned with three unanswered goals of their own, winning the bout 3-1 and advancing to the finals.

  • Team USA star Zach Werenski said: “We used [the boos] as motivation the best we could and found a way to get a win… Definitely don’t like it, though."

Geopolitics: The high tensions appear to be an overflow from the real-life friction between the two nations as President Donald Trump, seeking to even the trade imbalance with Canada, often refers to it as the 51st state and its Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau.”

What happens next: The U.S. heads to the finals in Boston on February 20.

No, Trump is not giving Elon Musk $400 million for Cybertrucks

Left-wing news outlets, namely MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, spread a blatantly false story, claiming President Donald Trump was handing Elon Musk’s Tesla a lucrative $400 million contract. In every possible way, the story was fake news.

Bad reporting: Last week, a slew of left-wing media outlets and social media personalities repeated the claim that the Trump administration had planned to procure $400 million “armored Teslas.”

  • The loudest voice to amplify the story was MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, who suggested the story showed Trump was making an “illegal or profoundly corrupt” move.

  • The story was also reported by the “paper of record” — The New York Times.

Origin story: The report seems to have originated from an obscure left-wing site called DropSite.

Musk himself sounded confused by the reporting, writing on X: "I’m pretty sure Tesla isn’t getting $400M. No one mentioned it to me, at least."

The truth: It turns out the interest in armored Cybertrucks didn’t come from the Trump administration… It came from the Biden regime. The State Department confirmed the purchase was explored in 2024 as a follow-up to Joe Biden’s 2021 executive order encouraging government agencies to buy electric vehicles whenever possible.

  • Moreover, the Trump administration confirmed that the possible purchase wasn’t even active.

Big picture: MSNBC and the NY Times have endless resources and could have easily reached out to the White House before amplifying this false claim. They chose not to.
