Wake Up Right - February 24, 2025

Welcome back, Wake Up Right fam!

A new poll from YouGov found that more Americans trust President Trump (44%) for "fair, full, and accurate facts" than they do the media (29%).

The man who coined the term "fake news" in 2016 is now more trusted than the media itself. 🇺🇸

Trump and Maine square off over boys in girls’ sports

The state of Maine could lose federal funding over its Democrat governor Janet Mills’ open defiance of Title IX and President Donald Trump’s executive order mandating that schools not allow males to compete against females in sports.

The details: The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights launched an investigation into Maine school policies on transgender athletes after a biological male pole vaulter won a championship in the female division last week.

Dollars and cents: The Maine governor risks losing the $250 million in federal funding her state receives annually over her refusal to comply.

The law: The Trump admin says Maine is violating Title IX, which enshrines protections for female athletes. The Biden regime tried unsuccessfully to expand Title IX to include transgender athletes, which would have allowed biological men to compete against women and share their bathrooms, showers, and locker rooms.

  • Trump signed an executive order on February 5 barring schools from allowing men to participate in women's sports.

Fighting words: The showdown became very public at a White House governors working session on Friday, when Trump called out Maine governor Janet Mills and said: “You better [comply], because you’re not gonna get any federal funding.”

  • Mills responded, saying: “We’ll see you in court.”

  • Trump shot back: “I look forward to that. That should be a real easy one. And enjoy your life after governor because I don’t think you’ll be elected politics.”

Real talk from G: The issue of transgender biological men playing in women’s sports was a key campaign issue that helped him win over some moderate Democrats in the 2024 election, so Mills may be choosing the wrong hill to die on.

The last word goes to Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, who said:

  • “If Maine wants to continue to receive federal funds from the Education Department, it has to follow Title IX. If it wants to forgo federal funds and continue to trample the rights of its young female athletes, that, too, is its choice."

The Right rises in Germany

Germany took a big step to the right as voters went to the polls over the weekend, rebuking years of poor economic growth and unchained illegal immigration under the existing leftist government led by Olaf Scholz.

The details: The big winner was the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Friedrich Merz, which took 28% of the vote. The CDU ran a coalition with its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU).

  • A close second: The “far right“ Alternative for Germany (AfD) party had an impressive turnout with 20.8% of the vote.

  • The big loser was the current ruling liberal party, headed by Olaf Schultz — the Social Democratic Party, which only captured 16% of the vote.

How we got here: The German economy has been ravaged by bad policies like overregulation and green energy mandates — with industrial production [think automakers] down 20% since 2017.

  • Energy prices: Additionally, the war in Ukraine has led to rising energy costs, as the country has relied on Russian natural gas. Wholesale electricity is nearly four times higher than it was pre-war.

  • Immigration: Between 2014-2022 Germany imported nearly 3 million people from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine. And as of 2022, about 28% of its population were foreign-born.

Germany’s new leader: Friedrich Merz is seen as an establishment conservative, and his CDU is the same party as former Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was the godmother of unchecked immigration into Germany. The twist is that while Merkel lurched the party to the left, Merz seeks to set it back towards the right — specifically on combatting immigration, lowering taxes, and removing regulations on businesses.

Winners and losers: The real winner was the global right-wing populist movement. The losers were the mainstream media. The AfD, just like Trump, was slandered by the mainstream media as “far right” and frequently slandered as Nazis and authoritarians. But again and again, voters are tuning out the noise.
