Wake Up Right - February 26, 2025

What’s up, Wake Up Right fam! Let’s kick off the morning by fact-checking the fake news.
New York Times reporter Peter Baker [a longtime deep state mouthpiece] claimed on X yesterday that the Trump administration's treatment of the press "reminds me of… the Kremlin.”
Here’s the truth: In his first month, Trump has personally answered more than 1,000 questions from the press. Here’s how that compares to his predecessors:
Obama: 161 questions
Biden: 141 questions
The press has never had a more accessible President than Donald John Trump.

Zelenskyy agrees to mineral deal with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reportedly agreed to President Donald Trump's proposed rare earth minerals deal, bringing the region one step closer to an end to the war with Russia.
The details: According to reports, Zelenskyy has agreed to the deal, which will guarantee U.S. access to vital rare earth minerals and net his country continued U.S. assistance. The breakthrough occurred when the U.S. dropped its demand for $500 billion in revenue from mineral extractments. Under this new deal:
Ukraine will contribute 50% of future proceeds from mineral extraction, oil, and gas projects to a fund to invest in domestic projects.
The size of the U.S. stake or joint ownership in this fund has not been released yet.
It does not give Ukraine its desired entry into NATO.
It does not contain security guarantees from the U.S.
Back up: Previously, Zelenskyy demanded security guarantees in exchange for mineral access.
What happens next? Zelenskyy will reportedly visit Trump at the White House on Friday to announce the deal.
Reality check: It’s worth mentioning that much of Ukraine’s rare earth minerals remain undeveloped and 40% of them are currently in territory occupied by Russia. So, it could be years before anything of value is extracted.
Big picture: As the Trump administration holds direct bilateral talks with Russia on ending the war, it is in Zelenskyy’s best interest to solidify Ukraine’s future economic ties with the U.S.

House GOP passes Trump budget plan

House Republicans passed President Donald Trump‘s spending resolution yesterday - paving the way toward funding his campaign promises and proving the party can govern despite a razor-thin majority.
The details: The House passed the bill by a 217-215 vote, with all Democrats voting against it, joined by Republican Thomas Massie. The bill includes:
no taxes on tips
no taxes on Social Security
no taxes on overtime
$4.5 trillion in tax cuts, extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts, which are set to expire this year
mandatory $1.5-2 trillion in spending cuts
increases spending on border security, judiciary, and defense by roughly $300 billion
Close call: House Speaker Mike Johnson pulled the vote Tuesday afternoon when it appeared to be dead on arrival due to objections from fiscal conservatives, led by Massie, who wanted deeper cuts. However, after Trump began calling lawmakers directly and whipping votes, the tides turned.
Quote: Speaker Johnson wrote on X last night: “House Republicans got it done tonight. This vote was a key step in the process to deliver President Trump’s full America First agenda.”
What happens next? House committees will meet and build their own framework of Trump’s budget, which will then be sent to the Senate and voted on under the ‘budget reconciliation process’ which allows for passing budget-related legislation with a simple majority vote rather than requiring 60 Senators. This is important since Republicans only hold 53 seats.
