Trump says U.S. will ‘take over’ Gaza

President Donald Trump suggested the United States could "take over" the Gaza Strip during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday — is it a negotiation tactic or legitimate plan?

The details: Netanyahu traveled to the White House yesterday to meet with Trump to discuss the ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Hamas and future regional plans. Following their meeting, the pair held a press conference where Trump took the world by surprise, declaring:

• "The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip… We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous, unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site… level it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area."

• Netanyahu responded, saying the plan “could change history, and I think it is worth pursuing this avenue.”

Sending U.S. troops? A reporter asked Trump if he would be willing to send U.S. troops to secure Gaza. He first suggested that Saudi Arabia would play a role but ultimately said, "We will do what's necessary."

Back up: Israel and Hamas have been at war — with the theater primarily being in Gaza — since the terror group's October 7, 2023 attack, where it killed roughly 1,200 Israelis and took hundreds hostage, including Americans.

Ceasefire: Under a deal brokered by President Trump’s team, Israel and Hamas agreed to a first-phase ceasefire deal, which includes the staggered release of 33 hostages.

• The second phase of the deal, which would include the release of the remaining hostages and long-term plans for Gaza, is being negotiated now.

Is this the Art of the Deal? When Trump negotiates, he often takes two giant steps forward and then one small step back. Most recently, in Panama, he threatened to seize control of the vital passageway but ultimately settled on the Panamanian government terminating its contracts with China — which was his actual goal. As negotiations over Gaza begin, Trump may be taking the same approach.

Or is it Trump’s next big real estate project? He told the press: “I think you’ll make that into an international, unbelievable place… I don’t want to be cute, I don’t want to be a wise guy, but the Riviera of the Middle East… this could be so magnificent.”

Relocation: Trump floated having neighboring Arab nations like Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia take in Gaza’s 1.8 million Palestinians, noting: "The only reason the Palestinians want to go back to Gaza is they have no alternative.”

Relocating Palestinians out of Gaza will not be an easy political move for Trump.

What happens next? Over the next two weeks, King Abdullah II of Jordan and Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will visit the White House, where Gaza will surely be a topic of conversation.

Real talk from G: In my humble observation, this feels like Trump is getting no viable long-term solutions or cooperation from Middle East allies, so he’s telling them, “This is my plan. Come up with a better one if you don’t like it.”

NFL removes woke ‘End Racism’ from end zones

The NFL will remove the "End Racism" slogan from Super Bowl LIX end zones — which it introduced in 2020.

The details: NFL Spokesman Brian McCarthy announced the change, adding that the slogans will be replaced with “Choose Love” and “It Takes All of Us.”

• McCarthy said: “We felt it was an appropriate statement for what the country has collectively endured, given recent tragedies [New Orleans terrorist, LA wildfires, and D.C. plane crash] and can serve as an inspiration."

Zoom out: President Donald Trump plans to attend this year’s Super Bowl – the first time a commander-in-chief has done so.

Back up: The NFL began using the "End Racism" slogan in the end zones in 2020, following the George Floyd riots that summer that left cities burned and looted.

NFL still ❤️’s DEI: Earlier this week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell doubled down on the league’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, saying: "We're going to continue those efforts because… it does make the NFL better.”

Big picture: Hundreds of companies have closed their DEI offices in recent weeks following President Donald Trump’s election victory and an overall shift in public perception of DEI. While the NFL claims the scrapped slogan is not related, it’s unlikely that the move is a coincidence.
