What we know about the tragedy on the Potomac

This is a breaking, evolving story. Below is what we know as of 6 am ET on Thursday:

An American Airlines passenger plane collided with an Army helicopter near Washington D.C. yesterday evening, sending both into the Potomac River. While emergency responders are looking for survivors, it appears all have died.

The details: An American Airlines plane carrying 64 people [60 passengers + 4 crew] collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter [3 on board] as it was landing at Reagan National Airport from Wichita, Kansas, around 9:30 pm ET Wednesday night. Both aircraft were sent into the Potomac River.

Rescue efforts: Search-and-rescue crews worked through the night in freezing temperatures as part of an effort that is expected to take several days.

Fatalities: D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said officials are not prepared to share a death toll or if there are any survivors. CNN reporter Gabe Cohen reported:

  • "While officials wouldn’t give us any information on the recovery, potential survivors, or the fatality count, you could tell it was not good and that, barring a miracle, they were looking at potentially the worst disaster here in Washington in decades."

The cause? No official cause has been released, but President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social:

  • “The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”

Zoom out: Commercial flights are equipped with a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) that is meant to prevent mid-air collisions like this by warning pilots of aircraft nearby.

What now? The airport will be shut down until 11 am ET today, and the D.C. mayor will hold a press conference at 7:30 am ET today.

Back up: Over the last few years, there have been repeated instances of near-collisions during take-off and landing at airports across the country.

Big picture: In his first week in office, President Trump signed an executive order to ban DEI at the Federal Aviation Administration, which was praised by top aviation lawyer Erin Applebaum, who said: "Politics has no place in aviation safety because there is no margin for error when lives are at stake."

Trump signs Laken Riley Act

President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law yesterday — the first bill of his new administration and a major step in his immigration crackdown.

The details: The Laken Riley Act, which was passed with bi-partisan support from Congress, mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants arrested for theft, burglary, or shoplifting — directly targeting Biden-era policies that allowed illegals with criminal records to remain in the U.S.

Zoom in: The bill’s namesake, Laken Riley, was a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student murdered in 2024 by an illegal alien gang member from Venezuela. Despite multiple previous arrests in the United States, he was allowed back on the streets by the Biden regime.

Angel mom: Laken's mom, Alysson Phillips, attended the signing ceremony and said:

  • “We also want to thank President Trump for the promises he made to us. He said he would secure our borders and that he would never forget about Laken, and he hasn’t. He’s a man of his word. Trust that he will fight for the American people.”

Zoom out: Since taking office, the number of illegal aliens encountered by law enforcement crossing the border has dropped by 92.9%.

The last word goes to President Trump, who, at the signing ceremony, said: “We will keep Laken’s memory alive in our hearts, forever [and] with today’s action, her name will also live forever in the laws of our country.”
