U.S. and China reach trade deal

The United States and China reached an agreement on a trade framework aimed at stabilizing the rocky relationship and addressing President Donald Trump’s concerns over trade imbalances.

The details: Trump announced “OUR DEAL WITH CHINA IS DONE” on Truth Social yesterday morning, following two days of negotiations in London between representatives from both nations. Full details are not public yet, but we know it includes:

• Tariffs: U.S. keeps 55% rate; China only charges 10%.

• Rare earths: China to ship key minerals upfront.

• Student visas: Chinese students can still attend U.S. schools.

• Export controls: Talks continue on U.S. jet engines and chip restrictions

Back up: Negotiations began after Trump and Xi spoke on the phone for 90 minutes last week, breaking weeks-long tension between the two nations.

What happens next? Both Xi and Trump need to give the deal their final endorsement.

Zoom out: U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick told CNBC there are “so many” other trade deals in the works that the administration will focus on, now that China is done.

Another great inflation report

The Consumer Price Index rose just 0.1% in May [month-over-month] — lower than economists’ predictions and defying fear-mongering from the left that claimed tariffs would increase inflation.

Note: I typically write about the year-over-year inflation numbers, but because that annual figure is weighed down by 8 months from the Biden regime, we’re focusing on month-over-month to see what has changed under Trump.

In case you’re wondering: The year-over-year number came in at 2.4%, near the lowest since March 2021, despite the Biden dead weight.

The numbers: The better-than-expected inflation data was led by price decreases in:

• 🍳 Eggs: -7.5%

• 🥛 Milk: -1.1%

• ⛽️ Gasonline: -0.7%

• 💨 Utility gas: -0.2%

• 👗 Clothing: -1%

• 👟 Footwear: -0.7%

• 🚗 New cars: -0.2%

Not too shabby: Other important areas like airfare, rent, medicine, used cars, poultry, fruits & vegetables, and medical care all saw monthly rates under 1%.

President Trump took a victory lap on Truth Social, writing: “CPI JUST OUT. GREAT NUMBERS! FED SHOULD LOWER ONE FULL POINT. WOULD PAY MUCH LESS INTEREST ON DEBT COMING DUE. SO IMPORTANT!!!”

Should the Fed cut interest rates? Yes. One of Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s main concerns with cutting interest rates has been fears that tariffs would lead to rising inflation. But Trump has kept inflation below 3% since returning to office.

Real talk from G: In April, the economic geniuses on TV told us “next month” tariffs would cause rising inflation. In May, we were told “next month” tariffs would cause rising inflation. It’s June. Inflation is still down.
