Wake Up Right - June 27, 2025

`

Happy Friday, Wake Up Right fam! The last time we said goodbye for the weekend, the consensus was that the U.S. was in the fast lane towards war in the Middle East.

Fast‑forward to today: President Trump has not only pacified the region, he’s become the world's "Daddy," as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte cheekily dubbed him.

What a difference a week makes. 🤣

  • 🇺🇸 GE shifts $500M in manufacturing from China to US

  • U.S. collected $121 billion in tariff revenue in 2025

  • 🆘 ICE arrested 130 Iranian security threats in past week

  • 📈 Trump approval avg: 46.9% approve, 51.0% disapprove

SCOTUS backs states’ right to defund Planned Parenthood

The Supreme Court ruled that states can choose to exclude abortion provider Planned Parenthood from Medicaid — a decision that could cascade across red states.

Back up: South Carolina cut Planned Parenthood out of its Medicaid program in 2018. The abortion provider sued, claiming the move violated the free-choice-of-provider provision in the Medicaid Act.

The details: In a 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that Planned Parenthood does not have the right to sue over its exclusion from South Carolina’s Medicaid program.

  • In the majority opinion, Justice Neil Gorsuch essentially said that plaintiffs can’t sue under the Medicaid Act because the law doesn’t give them that right.

  • Gorsuch added that the duty “belongs to the people’s elected representatives, not unelected judges charged with applying the law as they find it."

  • In the dissent, the three liberals [Sotomayor, Kagan, Bown Jackson] said the ruling would “result in tangible harm to real people.”

Zoom out: Federal law bars using Medicaid funds for abortions. But since Planned Parenthood provides other services, they find workarounds by saying they don’t use the federal dollars for abortion services.

Big picture: This move opens the floodgates to other conservative states to defund Planned Parenthood, which gets a majority of its funding from Medicaid and government grants.

RFK Jr. pulls funding from global vaccine group

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. announced the U.S. would cut off funding to GAVI, a Bill Gates-backed global vaccine alliance, until it takes steps to "re-earn the public's trust."

The details: In a short pre-recorded speech shown at a GAVI meeting in Brussels this week, Kennedy criticized the global vaccine group, primarily due to its actions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kennedy says the organization:

  • pushed “social media companies to silence dissenting views” and “stifle free speech.”

  • made "questionable recommendations" such as "encouraging pregnant women to receive COVID-19 vaccines."

DPT vaccine: Kennedy singles out GAVI’s promotion of the DTP vaccine in developing countries, citing major peer-reviewed studies showing that girls who receive it are up to 10 times more likely to die from all causes within their first six months of life. Notably, the DTP vaccine is no longer used in the developed world.

  • GAVI responded to this in a statement saying it “continues to have full confidence” in the DTP vaccine.

The numbers: The United States contributes roughly $300 million annually to GAVI.

No more cash: RFK Jr. says the U.S. will not contribute to GAVI until it can “re-earn the public trust” and “justify the $8 billion that America has provided in funding since 2001.”

Ties to Gates: GAVI has strong ties to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is its largest private donor, contributing $7.7 billion to it over the last 25 years. Bill Gates has been a vocal mouthpiece for COVID-19 vaccines.

The last word goes to Kennedy, who said: "Business as usual is over. Unaccountable and opaque policy-making is over… I invite all of you to join us in a new era of evidence-based medicine.”

A few months ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:

DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.

Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.

Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Comfort Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.
