Wake Up Right - June 4, 2025

Good morning, Wake Up Right fam! There appears to be a split in MAGA-world. Yesterday, Elon Musk called Trump’s 'Big, Beautiful Bill’ a “disgusting abomination.” 😮

We break down the beef in today’s newsletter. After you’ve read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the poll below.

Who's side are you on: Trump or Musk?

Here we go again: Chinese caught smuggling bioweapons into the U.S.

Two Chinese nationals are facing federal charges for allegedly smuggling a dangerous biological pathogen into the U.S., the FBI announced yesterday.

The details: The suspects, Yunqing Jian (33) and Zunyong Liu (34), were caught smuggling Fusarium graminearum, a crop-destroying fungus used in agroterrorism, through Detroit Metro Airport.

More about Fusarium graminearum: The dangerous pathogen causes a disease in wheat, barley, maize, and rice. If ingested, it can lead to liver damage and reproductive issues in humans and livestock.

The charges: Jian and Liu are charged with conspiracy, visa fraud, false statements, and smuggling hazardous material.

Links to the CCP: According to a post on X from FBI Director Kash Patel, Jian has expressed loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and received funding from the Chinese government to study this dangerous pathogen. Liu works at a Chinese university where he also studies the fungus.

Big picture: In recent years, the CCP has taken steps to infiltrate and potentially compromise U.S. infrastructure, including exploiting vulnerabilities in power grid components such as solar inverters and conducting cyberattacks on essential services like water treatment facilities and pipelines.

The last word goes to Kash Patel, who said: “This case is a sobering reminder that the CCP is working around the clock… [to put] American lives and our economy at serious risk.”

Big, beautiful billionaire beef

Elon Musk took a very public shot at President Donald Trump’s signature “big, beautiful” tax-and-spending bill yesterday, leaving folks on both sides of the aisle with permanent 😮 emoji face. And many are wondering: Was he motivated by principle or profit?

The details: Just days after his tenure as a special government employee ended, Musk lashed out at the bill on X, writing:

  • “I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

Big, beautiful refresher: The bill codifies many of Trump’s campaign policies: extending his 2017 tax cuts, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, offering a $4,000 tax credit for Social Security, boosting border security and defense spending, and raising the debt ceiling.

  • The downside: The Congressional Budget Office says it would increase the annual deficit by at least $600 billion in fiscal year 2026.

Principled argument: Musk has framed his opposition in principle, arguing that the bill would "increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt” — aligning himself with fiscal conservatives like Rand Paul and Thomas Massie who vehemently oppose the bill and have drawn Trump’s ire for it.

  • The White House rebuffs this argument. Stephen Miller explained to Musk that the significant cuts cannot be made to spending through this bill because it's a reconciliation bill — which can only impact discretionary spending. And most of the potential cuts identified by DOGE were to nondiscretionary spending.

…or Profit? A blockbuster report from Axios [no friend of Trump] lays out how Musk was simply “butthurt” by four specific perceived slights he had received from the Trump administration in recent weeks:

  1. The bill eliminates electric vehicle (EV) tax credits — something Musk lobbied to preserve and a direct benefit to Tesla.

  2. Musk lobbied for the FAA to use Starlink for air traffic control, but was rejected over appearances of a conflict of interest and the risk of reliance on satellite over fiber-optics.

  3. Musk wanted to stay as an unpaid special government employee, but the White House said the law did not allow him beyond the 130-day limit.

  4. Trump withdrew the nomination of Musk ally Jared Isaacman to be NASA administrator on Sunday.

Zoom out: Despite the vocal opposition to the bill, Musk has not directed any attacks against Trump specifically, instead calling out Congress. Likewise, Trump has not attacked Musk. The Axios report says, “Musk and Trump remain friends and allies.”

A few months ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:

DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.

Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.

Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Comfort Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.
