First jobs report under Trump 2.0 shows signs of life

The U.S. economy added more than 150,000 jobs in February — the first full month of President Donald Trump's second term — and showed positive signs for American workers.

The details: Nonfarm payrolls increased by 151,000 jobs in February, up from 125,000 in January. Average hourly earnings increased by 0.3%. And the unemployment rate edged slightly higher to 4.1%

Winners and losers: Healthcare led the way, adding 52,000 jobs. Financial services added 21,000 jobs. Transportation and warehousing added 18,000.

  • Federal government jobs declined by 10,000 last month amid efforts from the Department of Government Efficiency to slash the government workforce. It’s worth noting that these numbers are from mid-February, before many federal layoffs occurred.

Private sector takes over: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent touted the report on X, noting: “The reprivatization of the American economy is just beginning. February’s jobs report showed that 93% of the jobs created were in the private sector.”

Autos get a W: The auto industry accounted for roughly 10,000 manufacturing jobs. For reference, Biden was bleeding -9,000 per month on average.

Manufacturing gets a W: National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett pointed out:

  • “Last year, 111,000 manufacturing jobs were destroyed by the Biden administration’s policies. This month alone, in February, we got 10,000 manufacturing jobs and 9,000 auto jobs.”

The last word goes to White House Press Sec. Karoline Leavitt who said: “In one month under President Trump, the American economy is soaring back to greatness after the economic calamity left by Joe Biden."

CDC plans to study potential link between vaccines and autism

The Trump administration's Center for Disease Control (CDC) plans to conduct a large-scale study into potential links between vaccines and autism, according to a report from Reuters.

New sheriff in town: It is unclear whether newly minted Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is involved in the study, however he now oversees CDC operations. For years, RFK Jr. has questioned a link between autism and vaccines and has expressed his frustration with a lack of interest from federal health agencies.

  • In 2023, RFK Jr. posted on X: “Why does CDC refuse to investigate the cause of exploding Autism epidemic far more devastating than COVID?”

  • In 2024, he said: "The problem is the NIH will not let anybody study this... You can't get funded. And if you do manage to get funded, your career is over."

Back up: In December, then President-elect Trump told NBC News that Kennedy would look into rising autism rates, saying: “I think somebody has to find out. If you go back 25 years ago, you had very little autism."

The numbers: According to the CDC, one in 36 children has autism. In 2020, the prevalence was one in 150.

  • For perspective: President Trump and RFK Jr. often cite a study that found the instance of autism was just one in 10,000 in the 1970s. However, the study has been refuted by the scientific community, claiming at the time, the criteria for diagnosing autism were much narrower, and awareness was lower, leading to fewer diagnoses.

Vaccine schedule: In the 1970s, children received seven vaccines. Today, there are nearly 30 doses in a child’s first 18 months.

Way, way back: In 2014, then-civilian Trump directly questioned the link between vaccines and autism on then-Twitter, writing: "Healthy young child goes to doctor, gets pumped with massive shot of many vaccines, doesn't feel good and changes - AUTISM. Many such cases!"

What the left is saying: CNN reported on the potential study, with a caveat in the headline that read “despite robust evidence showing no link.” ABC News and other mainstream outlets included a similar qualifier.

Big picture: Whether you think there’s a link or not — 1 in 36 is a scary number. And no one should be resisting an effort to study why that number is so high.
