Wake Up Right - March 31, 2025

Welcome back, Wake Up Right fam! I try to keep things geographically broad in this newsletter because the Wake Up Right fam spans all 50 states and abroad. But please allow me to indulge my New Jersey bias for a moment…

On Saturday, a massive group of Garden State patriots rallied at a Tesla dealership in Northern Jersey to counter an anti-DOGE protest. I couldn’t make it, but I did drive by, and let’s just say, the patriots dominated the haters.

Well done, The Patriots Club. If you keep this energy, we will flip NJ red.

Listen to Navarro: ‘Trust in Trump’ on tariffs

As the White House prepares for "Liberation Day" on Wednesday — when President Donald Trump launches fresh tariffs on the United States' trade partners — his top trade advisor has a simple message for Americans: Trust in Trump.

Zoom out: On April 2, Trump is expected to roll out a wave of reciprocal tariffs on all nations that tariff the U.S. This will be followed by a 25% tariff on automotive imports the next day.

The details: Peter Navarro, Trump's senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, defended Trump's planned tariffs on Fox News Sunday, saying:

  • Tariffs work: "We have the example from the first term. We know that we imposed historically high tariffs... and all we got out of that was prosperity and price stability.

  • No inflation: “And the reason why we’re not going to see inflation is because the foreigners are going to eat most of it. They have to; we’re the biggest market in the world… They have to be here. And so they’re going to cut their prices to absorb that.”

Tariffs to tax cuts: Navarro explained that the reciprocal tariffs are expected to bring in $600 billion annually — $6 trillion over the next decade. And Trump wants to use that revenue to provide "the biggest tax cut in American history for the middle class, for the blue-collar deplorables."

Looking back to look forward: Navarro used history to explain why tariffs are a matter of national security:

  • “When General George S. Patton went to Berlin, it was with trucks, Jeeps, and tanks that were made in the auto plants of the Midwest. Right now, the only thing that looks like the Midwest back then is Mexico. You go across the diaspora of cities in Mexico, there’s football-field-sized — 50 football field-sized assembly plants that are down there making the engines for here. We can’t do that.”

More about Peter: Navarro served as Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy in President Donald Trump's first administration. In 2022, he was convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with the sham January 6 committee, leading to him spending four months in prison. He’s MAGA to the core.

Big picture: Navarro articulated the ‘big picture’ on tariffs succinctly, saying: “Tariffs are tax cuts. Tariffs are jobs. Tariffs are national security. Tariffs are great for America. Tariffs will make America great again."

Shop the Wake Up Right store!

About a month ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:

DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.

Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.

Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Custom Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.

The mythical Trump third term

A legal loophole in the 22nd Amendment could allow President Donald Trump to return to the presidency for a third — and even fourth — term.

The details: Over the weekend, the Daily Mail, citing a 1999 Minnesota Law Review article, laid out a plausible scenario by which Trump could remain in office until 2037:

  • How it works: It would require J.D. Vance to run as President in 2028 with Trump as his VP. Upon being sworn in, Vance immediately resigns, making Trump the President again.

First, the Constitution: Section 1 of the 22nd Amendment reads:

  • "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."

The legal loophole: The proposed scenario exploits the 22nd Amendment’s use of the word “elected.” Legal scholars argue that under this proposed plan, Trump would not be elected more than twice.

Play this out: If this were to ever occur, Trump and Vance would need to run a transparent campaign, where the public understands the plan: “Vote Vance, get Trump.”

Legal challenges: Their opponents would almost certainly sue, but with the Supreme Court's textualist tilt, it could uphold it based on the literal wording.

Trump reacts: In a phone interview with NBC, Trump was asked about the third term talk, and he said: “A lot of people want me to do it... I’m focused on the current... [but] there are methods which you could do it.”

The rationale: Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon recently told News Nation’s Chris Cuomo that he endorses a third term because “A man like this comes along once every century if we're lucky… I wanna see him again in 2028.”

Real talk from G: I want everyone to understand that this is mostly speculative fun. If the scenario were played out, Trump would leave office at 90 years old. I’m sure the man wants to enjoy some of his senior years outside of politics. But you never know. He did tell NBC, “I like working.”
