Make Hospitals Healthy Again

The Trump administration is attempting to Make Hospitals Healthy Again – threatening to yank Medicare funding from any facility that keeps feeding patients junk food while trying to heal them.
The details: Hospitals will be required to align their food with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans – the Trump-era nutrition standards published in January that push farm-to-table eating and cut ultraprocessed foods – according to a memo issued Monday by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz.
White House health adviser Calley Means said at the event that it makes “absolutely no sense that hospitals are serving sugary drinks and processed food, inflammatory processed food, to their patients, 90% of whom are dealing with chronic conditions.”
Setting a good example: The announcement came at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, which is launching a farm-to-patient program using local farmers.
Back up: The new dietary guidelines released in January overhauled the federal food pyramid to prioritize protein, healthy fats, and whole foods – while declaring war on added sugars, refined carbs, and ultraprocessed foods for the first time.
Zoom out: The Trump administration has already applied these federal standards to food stamps and school lunches.
The leverage point: Nearly every hospital in America depends on Medicare to survive. Over 82% of hospitals have two-thirds of their inpatients covered by Medicare or Medicaid, and 96% rely on it for at least half of their patients. If the government is paying for it, the government gets to set the menu.
The last word goes to Secretary of Health & Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who said at the press conference:
“When you give people good food, they recover faster…We’re giving [sick people] food that is…impeding their capacity to heal, and that should not be true in hospitals. We should be giving them real food and good food.”

Get paid to turn in welfare scammers

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is launching a whistleblower rewards program that pays tipsters to help uncover welfare fraudsters – effectively deputizing everyday Americans as fraud hunters to fix a system that bleeds billions each year.
The details: The program, which goes live this week, targets Medicaid and Medicare scams and pays informants 10–30% of fines collected from convicted fraudsters. Payouts kick in on penalties exceeding $1 million and come directly from fines – not taxpayer dollars.
The scale: Medicaid and Medicare fraud costs taxpayers an estimated $68.7 billion each year, according to a 2022 study. Insane. Scammers are getting filthy rich in plain sight.
Zoom out: Bessent's move follows his recent trip to Minnesota – ground zero for Somali-immigrant-linked scams that allegedly ripped off at least $9 billion in welfare funds since 2018.
One scheme, Feeding Our Future, bilked $250 million meant to feed hungry kids. The cash went to luxury cars, handbags, and overseas properties.
Back up: Last year's Operation Gold Rush [the largest healthcare fraud bust in U.S. history] charged 324 defendants in a $10 billion scheme led by a Russian-backed mob that purchased legit medical suppliers and used them to file fake Medicare claims.
What's next? Treasury is also putting banks on notice, issuing an advisory with 24 red flags to watch for in healthcare-related transactions. Banks that ignore them risk massive fines.
