Trans surgeries increase mental health risks

A new study of over 100,000 patients raises serious concerns about the mental health effects of "gender-affirming" surgeries — finding higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among patients.

The details: Researchers at the University of Texas analyzed 107,583 patients diagnosed with gender dysphoria and compared those who had “gender-affirming” surgery with those who had not.

The results were published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine and found:

• Depression:

  • Males who had surgeries had a 25% rate vs. 11.5% without

  • Females who had surgeries had a 22.9% rate vs. 14.6% without

• Anxiety:

  • Males who had the surgeries had a 12.8% rate vs. 2.6% without

  • Females who had the surgeries had a 10.5% rate vs. 7.1% without

Conclusion: The study determined that depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and substance-use disorders were "significantly higher" among those who had trans surgeries.

Back up: This isn't the first study to make this connection. Back in April 2024, the National Institutes of Health found that people who had "gender-affirming" surgeries had much higher rates of PTSD, suicide attempts, and suicide.

The last word goes to Jonathan Alpert, a Manhattan-based psychotherapist, who commented on the study, saying:

• "These findings suggest that surgery alone doesn’t eliminate the complex psychological burdens that stem from societal stigma and personal struggles with identity. In fact, taking a scalpel to treat a psychological disorder can sometimes lead to more issues, as the study results are elucidating."

Trump delays tariffs on Mexico and Canada

President Donald Trump announced he would delay the implementation of tariffs on Canada and Mexico until April 2 as the world re-acquaints itself with his whiplash economic strategy.

The latest: Trump announced yesterday that he was pausing planned 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada — now saying he will offer a one month delay on all products covered under the USMCA trade agreement he negotiated in his first term.

• Roughly 40% of Canadian and Mexican imports fall outside the USMCA agreement.

• The move comes after calls with his North American counterparts. Trump said he paused the Mexican tariffs “out of respect for, President Sheinbaum” who he said was “working hard” to stop the flow of illegal aliens and fentanyl into the U.S.

Trade war balance: Canadian and Mexican tariffs have a fraction of the impact compared to U.S. tariffs.

• With Mexico: Roughly 32% of Mexico's GDP ($452.29 billion) comes from exports to the U.S. By contrast, just 2.88% of the U.S. GDP ($322.7 billion) comes from exports to Mexico.

• With Canada: Roughly 22% of Mexico's GDP ($482 billion) comes from exports to the U.S. By contrast, just 3.33% of the U.S. GDP ($322.7 billion) comes from exports to Mexico.

What do Americans think? As with most things, Americans are split along party lines on tariffs.

• Mexico tariffs: 68% of Republicans approve. 11% of Democrats approve.

• Canada tariffs: 57% of Republicans approve. 9% of Democrats approve.

The big picture: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessenet summed up the Trump doctrine on tariffs:

• “[Trump] believes three things: One, it is a good source of revenues. Two, it protects our important industries and their employees. And three… He uses it for negotiating.”
