Cleaning up the neighborhood

President Donald Trump launched a new multinational effort to combat drug cartels and organized crime across Latin America, positioning the United States at the center of a regional security coalition.

The details: Trump unveiled the “Americas Counter Cartel Coalition” during the inaugural Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida, alongside more than a dozen Western Hemisphere leaders, pledging to coordinate military, intelligence, and law enforcement efforts to dismantle transnational cartels. The plan includes four priorities:

  • Dismantling cartel networks and territorial control

  • Cutting off cartel financing and resources

  • Training and coordinating partner-nation militaries

  • Blocking hostile foreign influence in the region [More later]

Who attended? The summit brought together conservative-leaning leaders from across the region, including:

  • Argentina’s President Javier Milei

  • El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele

  • Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa

  • Chile President-elect José Antonio Kast

Zoom out: Trump said recent U.S. operations in Colombia, Venezuela, and elsewhere have already weakened trafficking routes.

  • The numbers: Under Operation Southern Spear, drug smuggling by sea into the United States has fallen 96%, according to the administration.

  • Trump added: “Over the last year, the world has witnessed the supreme power of the United States. We're the most powerful military country in the world."

The geopolitics: Trump also warned the United States will not allow “hostile foreign influence” to expand in the Western Hemisphere – a thinly veiled reference to China.

  • Beijing’s trade with Latin America reached $518 billion in 2024, and Chinese-backed infrastructure projects across the region have raised alarm bells.

The big picture: After decades of impotent leaders who allowed hostile powers and criminal networks to gain ground in the Western Hemisphere, President Donald Trump is moving to restore order in America’s backyard.

Islamic terrorists try to kill protestors

A protest outside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence turned into a terror scare after two suspects allegedly threw homemade explosive devices toward demonstrators — prompting arrests and a federal investigation.

Back up: On Saturday, two opposing demonstrations gathered near Gracie Mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side, drawing roughly 150 people combined.

  • The initial protest, led by activist Jake Lang, was protesting public Muslim calls to prayer in the city.

  • A larger counterprotest organized by a group called ‘Stand Against Hate’ assembled nearby, accusing Lang’s group of racism.

What happened? Around 12:30 p.m., an 18-year-old 'Stand Against Hate' protestor ignited and threw a bomb toward the group of protestors.

  • The device was an improvised explosive in a glass jar wrapped in tape and packed with nuts, bolts, and screws. It used a volatile explosive nicknamed “Mother of Satan” – favored by terrorists. Thankfully, it extinguished before exploding.

  • Police say the suspect attempted to deploy a second device moments later before officers intervened.

  • Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were arrested at the scene.

This was no joke: NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch later confirmed the device was a real improvised explosive device (IED) capable of causing “serious injury or death.”

Islamic terrorism: The man hurling the device could be heard screaming “Allahu Akbar” as he ran by.

Terror sympathizing NYC Mayor Zoran Mamdani finally broke his silence more than 24 hours after the Islam-inspired terrorist attack, but opened by condemning the side that was attacked, saying: “Yesterday, white supremacist Jake Lang organized a protest outside Gracie Mansion rooted in bigotry and racism.”

  • It’s worth noting that while Mandai did call the attack “reprehensible,” he did not name the Islam-inspired nature of the attack – even as he was quick to brand the victims “white supremacists.

Fake news: In NBC News’ reporting on the incident, it made it sound as if the bomb was used by the anti-Islam protestors. It read: “Multiple arrests made after ‘suspicious devices’ found outside Gracie Mansion, home of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, during anti-Islam rally and counterprotest.”

  • A community note on X fact-checked the article: “The bombs were thrown at the anti-Muslim protesters, not by the anti-Muslim protesters as this post and the story would lead you to believe.”

Zoom out: This comes one week after a man wearing a “Property of Allah” sweatshirt shot up a bar in Austin, Texas, killing three.

Real talk from G: I don’t know who Jake Long is. The media is characterizing him as a racist “far right” provocateur. I have no idea if that’s true, so I won’t speculate. However, I will say – if his group was there to protest the loud, Islamic calls to prayer that have been blasted throughout the day on loudspeakers in certain parts of New York City, then I don’t blame them for being angry.
