U.S. and Ukraine agree to minerals deal

President Donald Trump has sealed a landmark economic partnership with Ukraine, giving the U.S. preferential access to its untapped mineral wealth — an indirect route to repay the U.S. for its aid during the war with Russia.
The details: The agreement establishes the “U.S.-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund,” granting U.S. companies preferential access to Ukraine’s rare earth metals, lithium, oil, and natural gas.
Rare earth metals are essential in electronics, batteries, military tech, renewable energy, and more.
Security guarantee lite: The deal involves no direct guarantee of U.S. security. However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “Economic security is national security.”
What Ukraine is saying: Deputy PM Yulia Svyrydenko says: “It’s a win-win… It’s about investments, investments, and investments.”
Back up: This deal was originally set to be signed in February, but was derailed by Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s combative and highly-criticized appearance at the White House at the time.
Payback: The U.S. has given Ukraine over $180 billion in aid since the start of the war with Russia. This deal is Trump’s way of guaranteeing that the American taxpayer gets something in return.

GDP declines in Q1, but economy remains strong under the hood

The U.S. economy contracted by 0.3% in Q1 2025 for the first time since early 2022. However, the decline was not driven by traditional economic factors — they were skewed by businesses stockpiling imports ahead of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
The formula: The U.S. GDP is calculated with the formula: GDP = C + I + G + (X - M)
Consumption (How much Americans spend)
Investment (Business spending and new home construction)
Government spending
(X-M): Exports minus Imports
Imports skew it up: In the first quarter, businesses accelerated imports to stockpile goods before tariffs took effect. In March alone, imports hit an all-time high of $342.7 billion — a 27.5% increase. Overall, in Q1, imports shaved 4.83 points off the GDP and drove it down to -0.3%.
The fundamentals are good: Despite the headline number going negative, the key indicators still look strong:
✅ Domestic Demand Remains Robust: Core GDP, which reflects final sales to private U.S. purchasers [a measure of consumer and business spending] grew by 3.0%, indicating strong internal economic activity.
✅ Business Investment Surges: Nonresidential investment jumped 9.8%, with equipment spending up 22.5%, suggesting businesses are confident in future growth.
✅ Consumer Spending Holds Steady: While consumer spending growth slowed to 1.8% overall, it surged 0.7% in March alone, suggesting resilience despite tariff concerns.
What the White House is saying: A press release put out by the White House says: “Core GDP grew at a robust 3.0%. This signals strong underlying economic momentum that occurred after President Trump’s inauguration.”
What Trump is saying: In a post on Truth Social, he addressed the negative headline number, writing: “Our Country will boom, but we have to get rid of the Biden ‘Overhang.’ This will take a while, has NOTHING TO DO WITH TARIFFS, only that he left us with bad numbers, but when the boom begins, it will be like no other. BE PATIENT!!!”

About two months ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:
DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.
Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.
Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Comfort Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.
