Wake Up Right - May 15, 2025

Good morning, Wake Up Right fam! RFK Jr. testified on Capitol Hill yesterday for hours, where he was constantly fighting attacks from Democrats, but there was one quote that cut through all the slander and propaganda that’s worth being today’s First Word:
"There's no such thing as Republican children or Democratic children. These are our kids. 66% of them are damaged... Why can't we just agree with each other to put differences about so many [issues] aside?”
You can go back and watch the full hearing here.

Trump secures more deals on day 2 of Middle East trip

President Donald Trump landed another blockbuster economic win, announcing over a trillion dollars in deals with Qatar — the second major trade haul of his Middle East trip.
The details: The White House says the deals will "generate an economic exchange worth at least $1.2 trillion,” including deals with American companies like:
✈️ Boeing/GE: $96B for Dreamliners and 777Xs [largest ever widebody order]
🛢 McDermott: $8.5B in LNG infrastructure projects
🛸 General Atomics: $2B for advanced Reaper drones
🚁 Raytheon: $1B for drone defense systems
Plus, many more to “create thousands of well-paying jobs.”
Back up: This comes one day after President Trump announced Saudi Arabia would invest $600 billion in the U.S.
What Democrats are saying: They’re doing everything they can to focus the country’s attention on Qatar’s royal family offering a $400 million Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet for the President to use while the new Air Force One is being built — scandalizing it as a “gift” to Trump. My concern is more over the security of the president riding in a plane once owned by a foreign country.
Trump and the troops: While in Qatar, the President took time to visit the American soldiers stationed at Al-Udeid Air Base, where he told them:
“No visit in the Gulf would be complete without stopping to salute the people who keep America Safe, Strong, and Free!”
The last word comes straight from the White House fact sheet, which reads:
“As the dealmaker in chief, President Trump’s latest achievement in Qatar is another win for America.”

U.S. finds communication devices in Chinese tech

U.S. energy officials have uncovered rogue communication devices hidden inside Chinese-made solar inverters and batteries — reinforcing President Donald Trump’s longstanding concerns that reliance on Chinese tech could destabilize the American power grid.
What are inverters? Think of them as the digital brains of solar and battery systems.
The details: Energy officials discovered cellular radios and networking chips embedded inside the inverters and battery systems that were not disclosed to the buyers and grid operators.
How were they discovered? U.S. energy officials and independent security experts conducted physical and software tear-downs of the hardware, which is part of routine inspections for cybersecurity risks.
Why it matters: These rogue devices can be used to remotely tamper with the energy output, which could potentially allow China to conduct a coordinated shutdown of elements of the U.S. power grid.
Zoom out: Chinese companies Huawei and Sungrow dominate over half the global inverter market.
Trump’s been warning: President Trump has taken steps to loosen the United States' dependence on Chinese tech. In February, he signed a national security memorandum, directing the restriction on Chinese investments in critical sectors, including energy. Later, in April, he declared a National Energy Emergency to address the vulnerabilities in the U.S. electrical grid.
The last word goes t: Rep. August Pfluger, who said: “This is about national survival. The CCP stops at nothing to compromise our infrastructure.”

About two months ago, I was at a butcher in my neighborhood and saw a diagram of a cow, with all the cuts of meat labeled. And that gave me an idea for a t-shirt:
DOGE Butcher Shop — but instead of the cow, we use a pig. And the cuts of meat in the diagram represent all the waste, fraud, and abuse being butchered by the Trump admin.
Over the last few weeks, I worked with a really talented graphic designer who brought it to life. And on Friday I got a sample in the mail and I’m happy to say, it came out better than I’d hoped.
Also, my wife told me I had to mention that the t-shirt it’s printed on is Comfort Colors. Apparently, they’re well-known for high-quality materials. I just chose them because they are printed in the U.S. and made with 100 U.S. cotton.
