Christopher Nolan's $250 million adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey" is being slammed for DEI casting choices that critics say disrespect the cultural authenticity of Greek mythology in order to meet the diversity criteria required for Oscar eligibility.
The details: Nolan's film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, but the casting around him is what’s raising eyebrows.
Lupita Nyong'o plays Helen of Troy. Helen is described in Homer's Iliad as "white-armed" and the most beautiful woman in the ancient world.
Zendaya plays the goddess Athena.
Rapper Travis Scott will play Bard, a poet.
Elliot Page – the transgender actor formerly known as Ellen Page – plays one of Odysseus’ crew.
Back up: The Odyssey is Homer's 8th-century BC epic that follows Greek king Odysseus on a 10-year voyage home after the Trojan War, battling cyclops, sirens, and vengeful gods along the way.

The counter-argument: Defenders point out Nolan's all-white Oppenheimer won Best Picture under these same rules, proving they don't dictate casting. But Oppenheimer only qualified because Universal's diverse marketing and distribution teams checked two of the four boxes for him.

"Queen Cleopatra" (2023): Netflix cast Black British actress Adele James as the Greek-Egyptian queen – in a documentary, not a drama. Egypt's government formally accused Netflix of "falsifying history," and a Cairo lawyer tried to get the platform banned in the country.
"Anne Boleyn" (2021): UK’s Channel 5 network cast Black actress Jodie Turner-Smith as Henry VIII's famously white, English Tudor queen. Producers called it "identity-conscious casting" – a polite way of saying history doesn't matter.
