Trump introduces the Golden Dome

President Donald Trump announced plans to build a next-generation “Golden Dome” missile defense system to protect the U.S. homeland from a foreign attack.

The details: President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth unveiled the $175 billion project, which is expected to be "fully operational" by the end of his term.

• Range: Trump says the dome "will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from the other side of the world and even if they are launched from space."

• Missiles: Trump says the dome will be capable of neutralizing "hypersonic missiles, ballistic missiles, and advanced cruise missiles."

Back up: Trump's Golden Dome is in many ways the fulfillment of President Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, which sought to use space-based tech to intercept missiles and shield the U.S.

Further inspiration: The Golden Dome is an updated take on Israel's Iron Dome, which was developed with U.S. assistance.

China is big mad: Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning says, "China is seriously concerned" with Trump's creation of the Golden Dome, claiming it "undermines global strategic balance and stability.”

Zoom out: The first $25 billion in funding for the Golden Dome has been included in the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” that is currently being debated in the House.

Trump’s Capitol Hill field trip

President Donald Trump took a field trip down the road to Capitol Hill yesterday to rally House Republicans behind his "One, Big, Beautiful" spending and tax bill.

Zoom out: The bill aims to make Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent and codify key campaign promises like no tax on tips and overtime.

The politics: While Republicans control the House, their slim majority means they can only afford a few within the party to vote against the bill.

The holdouts: A handful of Republicans from two main camps are throwing a wrench in the bill:

• Freedom Caucus: Fiscally-conscious members like Chip Roy and Ralph Northam want deeper cuts to spending and more Medicaid reforms. Trump has privately told lawmakers not to "f**k around" with Medicaid.

• Blue-state Moderates: Lawmakers like Mike Lawler, Tom Kean, and Nick LaLota from New York and New Jersey want the SALT deduction cap raised further. Trump has already offered to triple it from $10k to $30k.

• Massie: Rep. Thomas Massie, whom Trump has repeatedly called a "grandstander," stands opposed to the bill, emphasizing concerns over fiscal responsibility and the national debt.

Breaking news: As I was preparing to send today’s newsletter, a report dropped that Speaker Johnson has reached an agreement with the blue-state moderates in his party, which would see the SALT cap increased to $40,000. This gives the bill a smoother path to passage.

Trump weighs in: While at the Capitol, the press asked President Trump about “holdouts.” He replied:

• "It’s not a case of holdouts… I think we're a very unified party... There are a some people who want a couple of things that maybe i don't like or that they're not gonna get... We have tremendous talent."

What’s next? Trump still needs to win over a few members of the Freedom Caucus, but Speaker Johnson says he plans to pass the bill by Memorial Day.

Big picture: The bill isn’t perfect — particularly on reigning in spending. But it does a lot of really great things for the American worker. Whether it passes will come down to Trump’s raw political power and whether it’s strong enough to bend the will of fiscal hawks in the party. My bet is it will.
