A federal judge just refused to block President Donald Trump's mail-in voting executive order – handing him a third straight win in a methodical campaign to clean up how America votes.
The details: On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols declined to halt Trump’s executive order, which tightens the process around mail-in voting, ruling the challenge premature and leaving the order in force.
What does Trump’s order do? It directs DHS to use Social Security data to flag noncitizens and build a federal citizenship voter list.
Critics sued to stop it; the order stands while litigation continues.
Win 2, the Court: In April, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Louisiana v. Callais that states can no longer use the Voting Rights Act as a reason to draw congressional districts around race. The ruling reset the rules nationwide and put up to 19 minority-drawn House seats back on the table this election cycle – and up to 140 seats down the line.
Win 2, the maps: The Callais ruling cleared the way for a redistricting wave. Texas drew five new GOP-friendly seats, with Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Utah following. Democrats fired back with their own redistricting moves, but the Cook Political Report projects Republicans will net five to seven House seats from the new maps alone.
Big picture: At its core, this isn't just about November maps. President Trump is redrawing the next decade of American elections right now.
