Tennessee sees red

Tennessee Republicans passed a new congressional map Thursday that erases the state's last Democratic-held district – the latest move in a redistricting wave sweeping red states after the Supreme Court’s recent decision on the Voting Rights Act.
The details: The new map targets the Memphis-based 9th District, held by Democrat Steve Cohen, by carving it into multiple districts. It now heads to Gov. Bill Lee for his expected signature.
Democrats made the vote chaotic – linking arms and blasting air horns on the floor, while State Troopers held back protesters trying to reach the chamber.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn, who pitched the 9-0 map, called it essential to "cement Trump's agenda."
Narrowing the Voting Rights Act: Last month, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Louisiana v. Callais, striking down a race-based redistricting plan, finding it unconstitutional. This opened the door for red states to dismantle majority-minority districts that have reliably elected Democrats for decades.
The wave: Tennessee is just the latest red state to move after the Court's ruling:
✅ Louisiana suspended its May 16 primary; Gov. Jeff Landry called the old map unconstitutional
✅ Alabama is in special session; Gov. Kay Ivey wants the pre-2023 map back
✅ Florida passed a new map hours after the ruling – potentially giving the GOP up to 4 seats
✅ South Carolina is eyeing redistricting away from Democrat Jim Clyburn's district after Trump personally lobbied for the move.
Trump isn't asking nicely; he’s demanding Republicans act. In Tuesday's Indiana primaries, Trump-endorsed challengers ousted 5 of the 7 GOP state lawmakers who blocked his redistricting efforts last year. Message received.
The numbers: Potential GOP House pickups across the five states range from 7 to 9 seats. Republicans currently hold a razor-thin House majority. A clean sweep here will help hold control of the House.
Last word from G: Democrats spent a decade weaponizing race-based gerrymandering under the guise of civil rights. The Court called BS. Now the map gets redrawn on neutral terms – and the math just happens to favor the GOP.

A star is born in LA

Spencer Pratt [Yes, that Spencer Pratt] is mounting a real challenge for mayor of Los Angeles, and the political establishment didn't see it coming.
The details: The former "Hills" bad guy filed to run as a Republican in this year’s LA mayoral race with zero political experience – and he's now polling second with the primary just weeks away on June 2.
Pratt filed to run on the one-year anniversary of the Palisades Fire, which destroyed his family's home – a tragedy he blames the current mayor, Karen Bass, for.
Back up: The January 2025 LA Fires destroyed over 17,000 homes and killed 12 people. Critics blasted Bass for being abroad when it broke out, an empty Santa Ynez Reservoir, and slow evacuation alerts that left residents scrambling.
His politics: Pratt is running on a localist platform: potholes, public safety, homelessness, and "making LA camera-ready again."
His style: He’s run a populist, outsider campaign. For example, he released an ad last week showing Mayor Bass's and Councilwoman Nithya Raman’s multimillion-dollar homes, saying, "They don't have to live in the mess they've created."
His polling: A UCLA Luskin poll from April 3 has Pratt in second place (11%) behind Bass (25%), but ahead of Nithya Raman (9%). If no one clears 50% in the June 2 primary election, the top two head to a November runoff.
Pratt's breakout debate: At Wednesday's NBC4/Telemundo 52 debate, a viewer poll had Pratt winning with roughly 89%. Key moments from the night included:
💬 When Bass touted offering treatment beds to the homeless, Pratt fired back: "These people do not want a bed. They want fentanyl or super meth." He told Raman she would get "stabbed in the neck" if she tried to engage the homeless under the LA freeways.
💬 Asked if noncitizens should vote in local elections, he said "no" – flat. Bass and Raman gave qualified non-answers. Pratt also pledged to lock up illegal alien criminals.
The last word goes to actor James Woods, who wrote on X:
“Spencer Pratt is surprisingly effective, direct, polite, and prepared in tonight’s debate. The other two have history as their enemy because everything they’ve done has been a catastrophe. He can absolutely win this thing.”
