Massive fraud uncovered in Minnesota’s Somali community

A massive welfare-fraud network mainly tied to Minnesota’s Somali refugee community has stolen billions in taxpayer dollars – with some of that money likely flowing to al-Shabab, the al-Qaeda–linked terror group operating in Somalia.

The details: A City Journal investigation found that fraud across Minnesota’s welfare programs ballooned into one of the biggest welfare heists in U.S. history. Here’s how:

• Feeding Our Future: Prosecutors have secured 56 convictions in the Feeding Our Future case alone, a scheme that stole roughly $300 million intended to feed children during COVID.

• Medicaid Housing Stabilization program: This welfare program exploded from $2.6M in projected cost to $104M in payouts – much of it fraudulent.

• Minnesota’s Medicaid autism spending jumped from $3M to $399M in five years, with Somali-run centers accused of paying parents kickbacks and fabricating diagnoses.

Funding terror: Federal sources say stolen U.S. dollars were pushed through hawalas [informal Somali money-transfer networks] where al-Shabab automatically takes a cut.

Somali problem: An imported, clan-based Somali network was at the center of this fraud, exploiting the U.S.'s generous welfare system.

• A Somali-American former investigator put it bluntly: “Nearly all of the defendants are from my community.”

Zoom out: Minnesota is home to far-left Somali Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who came to the U.S. in 1995 as a refugee. It is alleged that she married her brother in 2009 to get him legal status in the U.S.

Trump weighs in: The President responded to the report by terminating Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota, calling the state "a hub of fraudulent money laundering” and concluding: “Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER!”

• Rep. Omar responded to Trump’s post, writing: “I am a citizen and so are majority of Somalis in America. Good luck celebrating a policy change that really doesn’t have much impact on the Somalis you love to hate. We are here to stay 💁🏽‍♀️”

Trump to designate Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists

President Donald Trump will formally label the Muslim Brotherhood a Foreign Terrorist Organization – a move that's been long debated in D.C. but never executed.

The details: President Trump told Just the News on Sunday that his administration is drafting the order to designate the group as terrorists, and says it will be done “in the strongest and most powerful terms.”

What is the Muslim Brotherhood? It’s an Islamist political and social group founded in 1928. It has inspired groups like Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and even networks that later helped shape al-Qaeda and ISIS.

In their own words: In 1992, the U.S. government revealed internal Muslim Brotherhood documents that outlined their 100-year plan to infiltrate and dominate the West. One paragraph reads:

• “The [Brotherhood] must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

How they infiltrate the U.S.: The most recent example was reported earlier this week, finding that Qatar has pumped more than $20 billion into American schools on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood's effort to carve out footholds in U.S. institutions.

Back up: Trump has been considering the move since his first term.

Zoom out: U.S. allies like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Jordan already classify the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

Related: Last week Texas designated the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist and transnational crimninal organizations.

What the other side is saying: CAIR claims the designations are “anti-Muslim bigotry.”
