Blue wall stress test

Democrats are scrambling to defend blue-state turf in New Jersey and Virginia, where Republican challengers are threatening to upend years of Democratic dominance.

Garden State details: Democrat Rep. Mikie Sherrill and GOP challenger Jack Ciattarelli are neck-and-neck in the final stretch of the New Jersey governor’s race.

• Polling: The latest poll from AtlasIntel has it within the margin of error – Sherrill 50.2% and Citarelli with 49.3%.

• For perspective: Just a few months ago, Sherrill was up by roughly 20 points.

• She’s radical: Sherrill says she would mandate LGBTQ curriculum in NJ schools and says parents don’t have a right to opt-out.

• Back up: NJ is a historically blue state, despite electing Republican Chris Christie in 2009. It hasn’t voted for a Republican president since 1988.

• Presidential endorsements: Former President Barack Obama held a rally for Sherrill in Newark, NJ, this past weekend. You know they’re concerned when they roll out Obama for an off-year election. President Trump endorsed Citarelli but has kept a lower profile as his presence in the blue state risks energizing the left.

• Spending: The race has already surpassed $72 million and is projected to exceed $200 million – the highest in Garden State history.

• Election Day focus: Sherrill already has a 267,000-vote lead from early voting. So the Citarelli will need a strong Election Day turnout.

Old Dominion details: Former Democrat Rep. Abigail Spanberger leads Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle‑Sears in the Virginia gubernatorial race, but it's close.

• Polling: The latest polling from InsiderAdvantage has Spangler up by ten points.

• Scandal: Republicans hoped a text scandal involving Democrat AG candidate Jay Jones — who wished death on a GOP colleague and his children – plus Spangler’s refusal to revoke her endorsement, would damage her. It hasn’t.

• Trend alert: In 11 out of the 12 gubernatorial elections, Virginia voters have selected the candidate who is from the opposite the party in the White House.

Also notable: Pennsylvania will hold a key Supreme Court election, where voters will decide if three justice on the left-leaning court should be allowed to continue their term. The decision could shape future election rules in 2026 and 2028.

Big picture: There are no moral victories, but even if Republicans fall short, the tightening margins in deep-blue states like New Jersey show the political map is shifting. This is a trend we hope to roll into 2026.
