NYC Mayor ends prepaid debit cards for illegals after call with Trump

Democratic NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced the city will stop providing prepaid debit cards to illegal aliens, a decision that came shortly after a call with Donald Trump.

The details: Adams’ office issued a statement saying: “As we move towards more competitive contracting for asylum seeker programs, we have chosen not to renew the emergency contract for this pilot program once the one-year term concludes.”

Trump effect: The announcement comes less than 24 hours after Adams spoke to Trump over the phone to discuss "issues in the city."

Back up: The program used $3.6 million in taxpayer dollars to provide debit cards to illegal aliens staying in taxpayer-funded hotels throughout the city. A family of four would receive $350 per week.

Zoom out: Illegal aliens have cost New York City taxpayers $1.4 billion in the fiscal year 2024.

Adams 🤝 Trump: In the days leading up to the election, Adams replied “No” when asked if he agreed with rhetoric calling Trump “Hitler” and a “fascist” and added, “I don't think it’s fitting to state... the former president is equal to being Hitler."

It’s worth noting: Donald Trump has made public, sympathetic comments towards Adams regarding a recent federal probe into his administration. Trump suggests the probe was retaliation for Adams’ suggesting the Biden regime was to blame for NYC’s illegal alien crisis.

Big picture: Trump has made the border crisis a cornerstone of his 2nd term in the White House. And it appears — even before stepping foot in the White House — his policies are having an effect.

The polls were so wrong

In the weeks leading up to the presidential election, pollsters and pundits told us this would be one of the tightest races in U.S. history. They were so, so wrong.

Swing state-by-state: Using Real Clear Politics, which averages all of the swing-state polling, we can compare what the polls were saying against what the actual results were:

  • Arizona: Polls underestimated Trump by 4.1%

  • Pennsylvania: Polls underestimated Trump by 1.6%

  • Michigan: Polls underestimated Trump by 2%

  • Wisconsin: Polls underestimated Trump by 1.4%

  • Nevada: Polls underestimated Trump by 3.1%

  • Georgia: Polls underestimated Trump by 0.9%

  • North Carolina: Polls underestimated Trump by 2.2%

Blue states: While Trump did not steal any blue states from Kamala, he outperformed pollsters’ expectations in deep Democrat strongholds:

  • California: Trump won 40.1% of votes, vs. 34.3 in polls

  • New York: Trump won 44.2% of votes, vs. 39.3 in polls

  • New Jersey: Trump won 45.5% of votes, vs. 40 in the latest poll

The popular vote went just as poorly for the pollsters, who overall said Kamala had a +0.1% lead going into Election Day. As I write this, Trump is up +3%.

Historical trend: In 2020, the polling averages underestimated Trump's support by 2.7%. In 2016, they underestimated him by 1.1%. So, the polls have gotten progressively worse each time.

The biggest polling fail award goes to Ann Selzer of the Demoin Register, who, in the days before the election, released a “shock” poll saying Kamala would win ruby-red Iowa by 3 points. Trump won by nearly 14 points.

The last word goes to Donald Trump and Joe Rogan. Two weeks ago, Trump told the podcaster, “I really don’t believe too much in them.” Rogan replied, “Well, 2016 taught a lot of people about the ineffective use of polls.” Trump then joked, “I don't know of one person in my whole life that ever got called by a pollster."
