• The East Wing of the White House was built in 1942. It’s not part of the original historic structure.

Trump’s war on narco terrorists

President Donald Trump is quietly executing a war on South America’s drug cartels — deploying U.S. naval power against “narco-terrorists” in Venezuela.

The details: Earlier this month, the Trump administration declared the U.S. was in a "non-international armed conflict" with drug cartels and narco terrorists, according to a memo obtained by the Associated Press.

• In August, the U.S. deployed three guided missile destroyers off Venezuela as part of Trump's war on drug cartels.

• Since September, the U.S. military has carried out at least seven strikes against drug smuggling boats – including a September 2 strike that killed 11 people linked to the Tren de Aragua gang.

• The U.S. has had a major military build-up across the Caribbean, deploying bombers, warships, and Marines as part of the campaign against "narco-terrorist" networks.

Maduro in crosshairs: The U.S. recently raised its bounty on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to $50 million.

Back up: On Trump’s first day back in office, he signed an executive order designating the drug cartels as global terrorists.

Zoom out: Almost 200,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2023 and 2024 alone.

Domestic Disturbance: Trump has accused Maduro of running the violent Tren de Aragua gang, which was allowed to gain a foothold in the U.S. under Joe Biden's lax border policies.

Colombia enters the chat: In recent weeks, Trump has widened his scope to include Colombia, which is responsible for an incalculable amount of drugs that flow into the United States.

• He recently called its far-left president Gustavo Petro a "lunatic" and an "illegal drug leader" who is "encouraging the massive production of narcotics" in his country.

• Trump vowed to cut off all aid and initiate tariffs.

• Petro responded by musing about getting “rid of” Trump.

What the left thinks: Democrats in the House are calling for a hearing to determine the legality of Trump's strikes.

Friend of my enemy is my enemy: On the surface, Trump’s campaign targets cartels. But dig deeper, and this could be more about thwarting China’s quiet westward expansion through its new allies in Latin America, from Petro’s Colombia to Maduro’s Venezuela.
