Wake Up Right - October 31, 2025

Happy Halloween, Wake Up Right fam! Last night two kids ding-dong-ditched my house, and my first instinct was to chase them down. But then I thought: “Good for them!”
In a world of sanitized celebrations like “trunk-or-treat,” I’m glad kids are still out there keeping the “Mischief Night” tradition alive.
I hope you all have a fun, safe, and slightly mischievous Halloween!

Shutdown goes nuclear

President Donald Trump is calling on Senate Republicans to use the “nuclear” option to end the government shutdown – after weeks of Democrats’ political games.
The details: Trump sounded off on Truth Social last night, writing, “Democrats are Crazed Lunatics that have lost all sense of WISDOM and REALITY” and called on Republicans “to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!”
What does that mean? Normally, it only takes 51 votes to pass a bill in the Senate. But because of the filibuster rule, most bills actually need 60 votes to move forward — that’s how many are required to end debate and bring the bill to a final vote.
The “nuclear option” Trump is talking about would let Senate Republicans change the rules to eliminate the filibuster entirely. That change itself only needs a simple majority (51 votes) to pass.
Real talk from G: The political downside of using the nuclear option is that you’ve now let the genie out of the bottle, and if democrats return to power they are certain to use it to pass the most radical legislation you’ve ever seen. Trump’s argument is: They’re going to use it anyway. And he’s probably right.
Zoom out: The government shutdown is now in its 31st day — just four days shy of breaking the all-time record set during 2019.
Pressure points: Tomorrow, funding for food stamps administered through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will expire, leaving 42 million Americans without access to benefits. This will put substantial pressure on lawmakers to end the shutdown. Why 1 in 9 Americans is on food stamps is another convo for another day.
Additionally, yesterday, the CEOs of Delta and United Airlines both called on Democrats to vote to pass the Republicans’ clean ‘continuing resolution to continue funding the government at current levels. This comes as airports across the country are in chaos due to air traffic controllers not getting paid.
What happens next? The Senate is adjourned until Monday, so it’s looking increasingly likely that this shutdown will become the longest in history – something Democrats, I’m sure, want to hang on Trump’s presidential record.
The last word goes to House Speaker Mike Johnson, who said yesterday: “The simple truth is Democrats in Congress have dragged our country into another reckless shutdown to satisfy their far-left base. That is the truth. Whether or not the government remains open or reopens is entirely up to them.”
