Au revoir, Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation yesterday, stepping down as PM and Liberal Party leader amid scandals, policy failures, and declining public trust.

The details: Speaking outside the Rideau Cottage [kind of like Canada’s White House], Trudeau addressed the media, saying: "I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process.”

Scandals and policy failures: This ends Trudeau's tumultuous nine-year reign over Canada, marked by foolish and dictatorial policy decisions that hurt Canadian citizens as well as embarrassing scandals:

• Pandemic abuse: During COVID-19, Trudeau invoked counter-terrorism laws to suppress the Freedom Convoy trucker protests, freezing the bank accounts of demonstrators and donors.

• Immigration surged under Trudeau, causing economic strain, rising home prices, and welfare dependency by many of the newcomers.

• Wildfires devastated Canada due to his negligent forest management policies, which he attributed vaguely to climate change.

• Blackface: Let's not forget the images that came out in 2019 and 2021 showing Trudeau wearing blackface.

• Legal suicide: Canada’s “medically assisted suicide,” which allows doctors to kill citizens at their request, now accounts for 1 in 20 deaths.

What Canadians think: Trudeau leaves office with an abysmal 22% approval and 74% disapproval rating.

Trump responds: President-elect Donald Trump responded to the news, suggesting on Truth Social that Canada should become the 51st state:

• “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

What happens next? The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, seems poised to win the next election and take power in Canada.

LGBT liberals call to arms

Gun ownership among LGBTQ liberals is on the rise, driven by unrealistic fears of oppression under a potential second Trump administration.

The details: The Philadelphia Inquirer published an editorial over the weekend, highlighting members of groups like the Liberal Gun Club, the Socialist Rifle Association, and the Pink Pistols.

• The Liberal Gun Club claims they received "thousands" of firearm training requests since Trump was elected, and about 25% of them were from people who identify as LGBTQ.

• The Pink Pistols boast the slogan: "Armed Gays Don't Get Bashed."

• The Socialist Rifle Association told the outlet it saw a "surge" of paid memberships and that their gun safety classes are filling up.

Quote: A transgender person who was identified in the article as 'A' told the outlet: “Three months before the election, that’s when the alarm bells started to ring."

Zoom out: Over the past few years, we've seen several high-profile mass shootings committed by people who identify as transgender, most notably the Nashville shooter who killed three children and three adults at a Christian school in 2023.

Gun ownership rates: A recent Gallup poll found that Republican women (33%) are more likely to own a gun than Democrat men (29%).

Real talk from G: I applaud all Americans who choose to learn to safely use guns. But there’s a sort of frantic, reactionary tinge to this call to arms that does not exactly scream “responsible gun ownership.”
