Musk and Trump crash out

A small crack in Elon Musk and President Donald Trump's relationship exploded into a full-blown canyon yesterday, as their once-powerful alliance imploded on social media.

Back up: Earlier this week, Musk publicly trashed Trump’s signature “big, beautiful bill,” calling it “a disgusting abomination” but directed his ire at Congress, rather than the president. Trump took the high road and did not respond to the criticism at the time.

Things escalated Thursday: During a press conference in the Oval Office with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump said he was “very surprised” by Musk’s recent comments and addressed his criticisms of the bill:

• “He knew every aspect of this bill. He knew it better than almost anybody. And he never had a problem until right after he left. I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

Elon crashes out: Within minutes of Trump’s comments, Musk launched into a tirade on X, which began with a simple defense but devolved into accusations of pedophilia and calls for impeachment.

• Response to the bill: “False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”

• Ungrateful: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate. Such ingratitude.""

• Epstein link: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

• Impeachment: Musk replied “Yes” to a post from Malaysian online troll Ian Miles Cheong that said "Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him."

Trump Truths back: Never one to avoid a good online food fight, Trump responded on Truth Social, writing:

• Wearing thin: “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!”

• Cutting subsidies: “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”

• Trump’s last Truth: “I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress… I didn’t create this mess, I’m just here to FIX IT. This puts our Country on a Path of Greatness. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Addressing Epstein: It’s been public knowledge that Trump appears in the Epstein logs, as they were released by his own administration months ago. It’s in the public record that Trump was an acquaintance of the deceased child rapist. If Musk really believed or had some inside information that Trump was a pedophile [I can’t believe I even have to write that], why did he often leave his young son X with the president?

What the Democrats are saying: They’re having the time of their lives. The Democrats X account posted: “KILL THE BILL AND RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES!”

What MAGA is saying: Longtime Trump ally and his 2016 campaign president, Steve Bannon, advocated for deporting Musk to South Africa and using the Defense Production Act to seize SpaceX.

Cooler heads prevail…? Later in the day, Thursday, Musk responded, “You’re not wrong,” to a post by famed hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who said, “They should make peace for the benefit of our great country. We are much stronger together than apart.”

• Peace summit: A White House official confirmed Trump and Musk will speak privately today.
